Using my zoom at 21 mm and with its low 46 deg fov, I could fit the orion nebula and the double star in the fov. The double had a yellowish star and a blue star to the right of it. Anyone know the name of this double?

Where was the double star located relative to the nebula?

This information can help us tell you what you are looking at. There is a multiple star system, Hatsya, just below M42. It's the lowest star in the sword region.

I have photos, but they are too large to upload here. Screenshotting again and again doesn't help.

Try going into the area at the top of your screen while you have the photo open. Click on the Tools button, and you should see a place where it says "Adjust size." Click on that, and it will give you options to adjust the resolution, width, height, and pixels. Lowering these will also lower the amount of data your photo uses. Once you reach something at or below (most likely below) the maximum amount of data you can upload here to CN, you should be able to upload them.

That's certainly a roundabout way of doing it. grin.gif

Simply resize photos you want to upload. waytogo.gif  800x1000 pixels is usually plenty.

ps... Love your enthusiam over the past few months!

Try uploading photos to a site like imgbb.com then you can post a link on here without needing to change the file size. It's free but there are pay features if you want.

You could add them to your gallery and then give a  link to your gallery.

I am guessing it is Nair al Saif, 44 Orionis.

It's a magnitude 2.8-7.8 double with a separation of 11.6" and about one half degree from the trapezium.

Reading what Sky Safari says about it, Nair al Saif means "the Bright One of the Sword" in Arabic.

Here's a screen capture from Stellarium showing the position of 45 and c (Mazin Batil I) Orionis (upper center).

Are we talking iota (44) Orionis? It would be on the other side of the FOV from the Trapezium. Above it in a Newtonian. And at 31x be fairly close. I wonder if the  glare of the primary at that magnification would wash it out. And it has always looked white and white to me, or maybe white and cool white. You might also be seeing STF 747.

You have ruled out the Trapezium, right? I know you are just starting out.

You may really like Almach if you’re looking for good color contrast doubles.
