Hello my fellow amateur astronomers!!

Just wanted to let everyone know that another episode of The Actual Astronomy Podcast dropped and it's a good one!!

"#294 - Stars You Should Know with Dave Chapman"

For all you new observers out there (I include myself in that group), this is an excellent episode to listen to and to check their notes out on the website. These are excellent stars to learn and memorize as they'll come in handy when plotting your way around the night sky. I posted this in the Beginners Forum because I believe there's some good info in there for those just starting out. This will give some good info on great navigation stars to use when first learning the sky.

Hope everyone has clear skies & fun observing!!

Thanks, Jim!

I think it was you who posted about this podcast several months ago. I've been enjoying it (and several others) ever since.

Thanks for sharing the link, my internet went down yesterday evening right after starting this thread and I wasn't able to comment back

Episodes can be found at that link or on their website here: https://actualastron...nbsp;

and here:
https://actualastron...odbean.com/

They're close to the 300 episode mark, so I'm positive there's an episode somewhere in their catalog that'll be of interest to any observer at any skill level.

** Edited for clarity since my internet still seems to be bugging out and doing some funny stuff**

And thanks to Matthew for starting this off! (Sorry I didn't properly recognize you initially.)

Here are some other podcasts that I've found worthwhile. They're quick nuggets noting what's of interest in the sky...easy to listen to on those short drives to the store and back, kind of like the old Jack Horkheimer "Star Hustler" and "Star Gazer" programs:

BACKYARD ASTRONOMER - Delta College Public Radio

SKY TOUR ASTRONOMY PODCAST - American Astronomical Society

STARDATE PODCAST - McDonald Observatory

Also of interest:

PLANETARY RADIO: SPACE EXPLORATION, ASTRONOMY AND SCIENCE - The Planetary Society

I found these through Google Podcasts. I expect they're equally available through other outlets.

Regards,

Dave

The Star Guide by Beyer is great, my uncle passed away and left me his copy, the premise is to memorize one star a night, most nights of the year and wind up very knowledgeable about several hundred over the course of a year.

Awesome!! Thanks for sharing those.

I usually listen to podcasts through Spotify, but I've found that most people do upload their content to most of the major podcasting software.

If anyone doesn't have a dedicated app to listen to the Actual Astronomy Podcast, their website that we've linked to is a great place to get it.

My number one astronomy podcast that I always recommend is The Actual Astronomy Podcast, but there are a few others out there also (although not many). In addition to those you mentioned, I also enjoy listening to:

- The AstroGuy Podcast

- Radio Astronomy (Sky At Night Star Diary)

- The Cosmic Companion

- Awesome Astronomy

- Space Junk

- The Backyard Astronomer's Diary with Jim Harstad

I've been listening to The Actual Astronomy Podcast for some time.

SpaceTime with Stuart Gary and the Universe Today Podcast are two other worthwhile astronomy podcasts.

Thanks, I realized I never do podcasts, and had even forgotten there was an app on my phone. Found the app and a simple search for Actual Astronomy brought it up. The link was helpful to find it on line though, although on my computer I prefer video. Been watching some episodes of the BBC Sky at Night.

The wonderful thing about podcasts is that you can listen to them when you’re doing other activities, like hiking, commuting, or crocheting. It’s for when you need your eyes for other things but your ears are still free.

That's exactly what got me into podcasts.

I absolutely love to read but I'm always so busy with work, travel, and farm life that I never seem to have time to dig into my overflowing bookshelves. So I started listening to audiobooks. Podcasts just seemed like a natural extension of that, being able to listen to news & media while still staying busy with work.

True, but for me, it's music or silence if I am concentrating on work. For commuting or exercising, maybe a podcast. Crocheting? Well sure. grin.gif

Dang, good catch. I thought I'd posted that one but seems skipped it while going down the list. As a new A.L.P.O. member I've been working my way through the archives of the podcast & Journal.
