I'm still fairly new to astrophotography and I enjoy it a lot! Had some time a few days ago to image Barnard's Loop. My exposure time was limited because my trip was a last second decision as I had work the next morning. Overall, I'm very happy with my picture.

Equipment:

  • iOptron Skyguider Pro
  • Canon T3i (modified)
  • Canon 50mm f1.8 (Stopped down to f2.8)
  • Bortle 4-5

Frames

  • Light frames - 63 x 1 min
  • Bias frames - 20
  • Flat frames - 20
  • Dark frames - 5

Processing

  • Stacked in Siril and used autostretch + background extraction to help remove gradient
  • Photoshop
    • Curves adjustments
    • One or two arc-10 curve adjustment presets applied
    • Stretches
    • Slightly cropped
  • Starnet++ to help remove some stars, then the image was blended with the original curved/stretched starry Barnard's Loop
Barnard's Loop Final

My apologies, I had to upload it first since it looks like the upload file under post didn't work but it should be there now!

Great shot. I would raise black level just a bit, otherwise perfect.

I am always amazed by shots like this.  No nebulosity is apparent to the naked eye, unless you consider M42 which was probably 'mistaken' for a star since Adam and Eve, but collect photons over time and all the nebulosity becomes obvious.  Just goes to show you that empty space isn't empty space.

That's great, I really love wide angle shots... There's just such a huge variety of objects the gigantic Orion Molecular Complex, I really want to attempt a widefield mosaic on it someday. You did a really good job getting the 50mm to behave, that thing is no joke to get properly focused for astro work...

Very nice capture!  I don't recommend using autostretch in Siril to perform the stretch of your image.  This is just a preview mode.  You'd bring out a lot more color using Asinh Stretch.
