Welcome
Sky-Portal is scaled down version of Sky-Safari and its totally free and easy to use.
If you can use Sky-Portal then try it first and If you like it then later you can move on to Sky Safari.
Sky Portal has more then 200 DSOs and entire Messier catalogue.
In my opinion, you can use both apps(Skyscan and Sky Safari) in a single device as both apps are different.
Good Luck.

I would not know about skyScan. I connect Sky-Portal to my house wifi.
In sky-Portal, DSO become visible only after the scope is connected.
You can also download Sky-Safari as well. Sky-Safari provides the free version also. It is exact copy of Sky-Portal.
The benefit of Sky-Safari is that it shows the DSOs without connecting the scope.

So the only free safari app is the astronomy app, which I already have and there is no telescope setup in it. So it looks like any of the telescope connection apps have to be paid for. And I guess I have to have a wifi module? I don’t have home wifi. I was hoping it would work with my skywatcher wifi. Will safari or skyportal be able to connect to my mount if I have a wifi module?
You will need a wifi module for connecting a app with the scope. However-
If by SkyWatcher Wifi you mean SynScan wifi module then it appears
that SynScan will work with SkySafari Plus/Pro.
See the attached picture-
