Purpose of forum

This forum was created to be a one-stop-shop experience to discuss all aspects of the 2024 North American Total Solar Eclipse. This forum is solely for the purpose stated and any topics related to everyday general observation and imaging of the Sun, should be posted as usual in the Solar Observing and Imaging forum. Any such topics posted in this forum are subject to immediate removal and / or transfer to the appropriate forum.

Safety issues

Please first read these safety recommendations and rules as posted by NASA.

While many people are quite capable of safely modifying and using modified solar telescopes and observation equipment, we choose to err on the side of caution. CN will not allow posts dealing with the modification of commercial equipment intended for solar astronomy (or images taken with such equipment) or the modification of other potentially harmful devices (e.g. laser pointers). While the results of modifications may seem attractive, the possible adverse consequences are deemed significant. Any posts dealing with these types of modifications, or linking to sites which feature them, will be removed by the moderators.

The Moderators of this forum, as well as Administrators, reserve the right to decide on the appropriateness of posts. If after reading the above, you wonder whether you should post something then you probably should not. CN's policy on this matter will always be safety first.

Images and 3rd party links / material

Please read below extracts from the Terms of Service on this matter:

"Any astro-photographs or images you post should be your own. Do not post re-edits of someone else’s images unless you have their permission. Passing off someone else’s astro-photos as your own will result in a permanent ban. Screen shots of software, apps, and websites are acceptable within reason (Moderators and Administrators will determine what’s reasonable). Scans of star charts or single pages from printed material, if used for illustrative or instructional purposes, will typically be allowed. Do not post complete scans of manuals, books, articles, or other printed material. We discourage the posting of distracting or annoying content, such as memes, and Moderators may remove such content without notice and at their discretion. Whenever possible, please include a link to the original material, image, or website. Image posting size restrictions are 1600X1200 px (maximum 500kb)."

and;

"Posting from other sites, and copyright and privacy issues: Please do not copy e-mails, articles, posts, or any other content from publications or from other online sites unless you are the owner of the material or have received explicit permission from the owner to do so. This permission must be included in your post. Using another person's work without permission is, at the very least, poor netiquette, and is not permitted on this forum. A summary or short quote (one or two sentences) is acceptable without permission, but you must include the identity of the original source. The best way to direct fellow CN members to material you have found is to simply include a link, when possible, in your post."

Commercial Issues (*Relaxed Vendor Rules Apply to this Forum ONLY*)

Due to the special and temporary nature of this forum the Administrators have agreed to relax the vendor posting rules in this forum only. Vendors are allowed to participate in any discussion on any topic and any product, but they are expected to be courteous, objective, and non-promotional. Attempts to skirt these rules will result in an immediate ban. Be adults. These special rules will expire when this forum is archived, or sooner if this extraordinary privilege is abused. The Vendor rules found in the Terms of Service still apply in all other fora of Cloudy Nights.

The moderators of this forum have created a vendor thread, wherein each vendor with 2024 eclipse-related products will be allowed a single post containing a brief description of their products and which may direct the readers' attention to a link in the vendor's signature. Contact a moderator of this forum to arrange having your post included.
