I'm going to Texas in April, my 4th eclipse, but would like to start planning for Luxor in 2027. I have very low travel standards and not that much equiptment. I'm also cheap thrifty. The idea of spending $6-8,000 for a package seems silly when I can plan most excursions, flight, train, hotel, etc. myself. Of course, other than those expensive tours, hotels don't seem to be taking reservations that far in advance. Any suggestions on how to lock in some of this as an individual?

My understanding is that Luxor has limited hotel space and that tours have already bought them up. Counter to that, August is very much not peak tourist season there. Anyone going should be ready for extreme heat. (I'm booked on a tour, FWIW).

Not sure what the weather prospects are, but the southern Spanish coast and/or Gibraltar are in the path and pretty easy places (normally) to tour.

I'd certainly consider going to Ghana and then sailing into the path of totality, or maybe seeing the eclipse from the land in Kuwait or southern Egypt.  But too many of the countries on that path of totality in 2034 aren't safe for tourists regardless of their nationality (they are just too politically unstable),, and if I am still traveling in 2034 I suspect that due to my age then I'd want to be closer to good medical care than many of those countries allow for.

But I hope the people who live on that path enjoy the sight!

Morocco is also on the path, and is fairly tourist-friendly.

The hat trick anywhere is going to be securing accommodations.  They are obviously going to be in high demand!

I'm leaving for the eclipse in Mazatlan on April 8 and then for our wedding anniversary we're going to Spain, so I'm going to take the opportunity to see a location for this eclipse.

I am now busy planning for the '26 Spain eclipse. I have not decided yet where to watch the '27 one but it'll probably be somewhere close to Gibraltar. The plan is to go by car for both events that lets me throw all the equipment I want in the back of the car and the dog on the backseat.

I've been to Egypt twice, but never to Abu Simbel.
So I'd love it if someone had a tour of Egypt that would include Luxor on Eclipse Day, and further touring to Abu Simble. I expect such a tour would require 10-14 days.
Anyone here a tour operator/travel agent? As Fry says in Futurama, "Take My Money!"

Which path? I see that Morocco is far from the path, if you mean totality, unless i don't have the correct map.

Well, admittedly it's only the upper part of Morocco but the path of totality is going over Morocco.

I am a neophyte with little knowledge of astronomy, but after seeing the total eclipse on Monday I never want to miss another one!  It was a life changing spiritual experience, as most of you probably know.

Anyway, I definitely want to see the 2027 eclipse in Egypt, as I’ve always wanted to go there anyway.  I would want to travel with a good tour company with fairly small groups and experts in astronomy to provide guidance and education — similar to Road Scholar tours I have taken.  I see people on this thread have mentioned some companies, but I’d like to hear recommendations (or advice to steer clear) from others who have personal experience.  Thank you!

I only witnessed one solar eclipse in my life in my country back in time, total eclipse maybe, but that time i wasn't into astrophotography to capture it, i was in photography and i captured the partial, i saw partial after that from my country, and i didn't try my best any hard to go to location where i can see it that annular eclipse at full, so i don't know in future if i am alive i can travel anywhere in the world to watch total eclipse again, but i won't give up the hope to make it, i only hope by that time if i am alive that my situations are all sorted out for good travel, i couldn't travel to USA this year, and will never travel to Australia or South Africa, but at least i could manage to travel to Arabic country because i live in middle east.

Starting to plan for 2027. We're not really river cruise or organized tour people. The Sky & Telescope / Insight Cruises prices look a little scary to me, but just may be a necessary evil.

➡️ Does anyone have experience booking trips this far in the future?

In the West, plane tickets and hotels can only be booked ~365 days in advance. Best to just reach out to individual hotels and tour operators individually for reservations?

I looked at insight cruises and was pretty overwhelmed with the choices. Can you give me an idea of your thought process on which one to choose?

Haven't looked at any 2027 tours, yet anyway. (My wife has serious problems with 120F+ (50C) temps and Americans aren't popular in that part of the world right now.)

As far as tours, I (we) think you need to pick one that goes the places you want to see. Details matter. (And more expensive can get you stuff you don't want / need OR it can save you by including things you want and otherwise would have to pay out of pocket for.)

E.g. on this tour we dropped about $100 yesterday getting around and filling our free time. On different tours we've seen people dropped in an admission line (to pay and waste an hour) while our more expensive tour with prepaid admission took us right in the group entrance.  A different example we were in downtown hotel, so we could walk anywhere on a free evening, and we later met some people on a tour we'd considered who were in a motel out town. To eat and sightsee downtown was a $70 cab ride, so they ate at the motel's coffee shop and skipped the sights. Understanding how you make those sorts of tradeoffs and reading the details for tours you find interesting is key to choosing for yourself.

Planning to attend as well and will organize a group to go from Cyprus to Egypt. At some point in the next year or two, I must get a mirrorless Canon camera and choose which software to use (SETnC probably). My AM5 is standing by, and I will probably take my 80mm f7 with me.

Additionally, a couple of GoPro cameras to get wide field videos and my SolarQuest mount with another small refractor for some bystanders. Goes without saying, I will be taking a backup laptop and backup camera. It should be entertaining, but the hardcore group has decided that we will issue strict instructions to our significant others to NOT interfere in any way with our shenanigans!

Sometime this year or early next year, I’ll decide on hotels, ask everyone to put down a deposit and go ahead with the bookings. All gear will be boxed, palletized and couriered straight to our hotel when the time comes.

are you organizing just for friends and family or are you inviting others as well? Also if you want the best wide field views ditch the go pro and get the insta360. Infinitely better than gopro . It's literally virtual reality that you can re experience through VR headsets but you can also reframe regular 2d views. I think go pro actually does make a 360 product also but not anywhere near as advanced as insta360.

The FOMO force is strong with me. I’m not much of a world traveler and at 55 have only been to Canada and Japan, but I’ll be **** if I miss the 2027 eclipse. So much value for a chaser, novice or expert. TBH I have (possibly irrational) fears about terrorism risks in Egypt but these Astro-Trails observation site descriptions are putting me at ease:

I don't like the idea of two days "at my leisure" on the ASTRO Tours trip. If I'm paying for an organized tour I want to have the itinerary arranged.

For those booking one of the Sky and Telescope Egypt 2027 tours, are you booking your own flights or paying the $400 fee to have them manage your flights? Wondering if it’s worth the fee.

Those tours are very expensive, and it sounds like everything costs extra, even educational talks.  Am I reading it wrong?
