Hi all,

I have been continuing to follow Mars (although it has been very cloudy here for the last few weeks) and I have now made a Mars map based on my observations made during this apparition.  I have added labels to the more obvious features.

Cheers,

-Paul

That is a beautiful map. I've always wanted to produce an albedo map of my own and managed one this past apparition based on what I saw using my 6" reflector. I thought that it looked OK but, now, seeing your amazing results I'm not too sure!  laugh.gif

Thanks Alex!  That's a good first map- very sensible to draw it on graph paper!  It's quite tough to do with a 6 inch telescope as the features are only really prominent for a month or so (and naturally it is cloudy during that time!)

Cheers,

-Paul

Paul could you provide any older maps you have done to compare changing features over time? Thanks

Hi t.r.,

I do have a few now, but I can only lay my hands on these two for now:

2020:

Mars_Map_2020-0909_to_2020-11-10_Named_PAbel.png

2018:

Mars_Map_2018-2019_Labels_PAbel.jpg

In 2018 Mars was very low down from the UK, and I didn't get too many observations hence some regions are largely blank.  The recent dust storms have changed Solis Lacus, Niliacus Lacus and Oxia Palus.  The last two apparitions have seen the southern hemisphere of Mars tilted towards us, so in 2018 it was not possible to see much of the north when Mars was well placed for observation.

Cheers,

-Paul

Excellent, Paul!  Good work on yours, too Alex.  flowerred.gif

Probably the most noticeable change to me is in Oxia Palus.
