Have an ASIAIR Plus... only been out a few times with it and with weather not good limited on exposure time.

Everything I read, more data the better... that seems to translate collecting data for a target on multiple nights.  How  do I make sure I get the same alignment from one night to another?  It would seem i need to have the same center point and camera rotation.  I thought I saw something about taking a preview shot, but the explanation didn't seem complete in my brain.

You just save the current location as a favorite. Using that you can create an imaging plan, and just run the same plan night after night.

In the Air, you can use one of your previous nights images to platesolve and do a GoTo and it will go right to the same framing.

In addition to the above you can also create a plan and have your selections there and re-execute your plan. If you change the rotation of the camera, though, it will want you to rotate it back to match the same orientation.

As mentioned, you can use the ASIAIR Image Management menu/screen to view any previously saved image.  ASIAIR can platesolve, goto, and center exactly like that image.  You can use the SkyAtlas and Preview screen to change rotation if needed.

Many people remove the saved images from ASIAIR to their local computer for later processing, which is fine, but you might consider leaving at least one sub on the ASIAIR just in case you want to revisit it like this.

You can also transfer any previously saved image back to the ASIAIR from your local computer if you want to.

How do you get that to work? I've mapped a drive and copied old subs back to the AAP, copied them onto a flash drive, and even dropped old subs into Lights folder for an active project and they don't show up in Image Management. It's like the device has to create the files before it will recognize them.

I now just leave 2 subs on the device as you mentioned if there is any chance I will come back to that target soon but I have not been able to get it to recognize an image after I've deleted it off the device and USB drive.

If you view the image in the image browser on AA then tap on the image and you should see a goto option. I don’t have AA running right now so I’m not sure if the exact wording but it is very obvious.

Wow, All good replies, very much appreciate the detail and thinking this through.

I'm thinking when I do something like that... I offload my files to my MAC storage, run them into the pre-processor and find the highest scored light.  Rename that file on the ASIAIR SD card, such as m65,m66,NGC3628_ProjectMaster.fit.  That way I get the best frame to goto and plate solve.  This is exciting, can't wait to get out and try it for real.

A follow-up question now.  When shooting a target such as m65 & m66, is camera rotation critical to the final product?  Is there best practice to how my camera is rotated in regards to Lat & Lon, or is rotation totally up to up to my choice or view of what looks good?   I'm thinking of things like Horsehead Nebula,  it seems I always see it presented in the same orientation.

Honestly I don’t worry about camera rotation at all. If something is bigger than my field of view I’ll do a mosaic. If it is smaller, I’ll change the rotation in post processing if I feel like it. It’s all pretty arbitrary anyway.

How it's rotated is totally up to you although some like the horsehead or M31 may only fit in the FOV at an angle or horizontally. Totally up to you and the size of your sensor.

When you have a target that barely fits into the FOV you may not have the ability to crop without losing part of your image. I had to break this one up over two nights because of clouds but was able to get it back framed perfectly by using an old sub. If it was off more than a few degrees I would have been cropping galaxies versus just a 1/4" of stacking artifacts.

With a Plus or Pro, you can open your computer file manager to \\asiair it it is connected to the same network.  Or, find the IP Address using the ASIAIR App while the Pro/Plus is connected to the same network as your computer and browse to \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (the ip address)

You can optionally save the files to SD Card for the Pro/Plus, or use the USB-C on the Plus to transfer files.

You’ll need to have the images in FIT format for the ASIAIR to view/platesolve them.

Something is off. Exactly what I’ve tried. I have not tried a direct USB-c transfer since the mount is generally in the backyard but yes on the others. Haven’t tried since the 2.1.1 upgrade but I guess I’ll give it another go next session.

I’ve heard lots of people say they copy files off but you are the first to put one back on and have the OS recognize it.

I have always just copied a file into a folder inside the ASIAIR folder of my thumb drive. Then go into image management on AA and have never failed to see the file show up.

They show up for me until I delete them. If I try to copy a file back from last year either onto the flash drive or back on the AAP that I had previously deleted it does not show up in Image Management for me to select. I can map a drive from my desktop and browse the folder and see the file there but IM wont show it for me to select.
