I am looking for advice on issues I have been having with setting up my automatic focuser system. I have a Starlight Instruments Feather Touch 2.5" feather touch focuser. I have a STI-MSM30 focuser motor. And I have an Optec Focus Lynx Focus Controller. In this setup I do see the focus motor move. But the motor does not move smoothly in one direction. What I see is when I have it set to 100 step travel is that the motor will move both forward and backward in a jerking manner and not actually get anywhere. The Optec Focus Lynx has the following Device Type Settings to choose from:
DirectSync/Posi-Drive motor
Quick Sync/HSM motor
Fast Focus for C11/C14
TCF-Leo low profile focuser
Sagitta OAG focuser motor
Sagitta 2 OAG focuser motor
FCF-Lynx 2"
FCF-Lynx 3"
FeatherTouch Microtouch MSM
Unipolar motor(ROBOFocus), requires convertor
I have tried the FeatherTouch Microtouch MSM selection, which gives me the symptoms I described above. The instructions said not to plug in the cable from the controller to the motor initially as that could cause severe damage to the motor (but it never says when you can plug it in). I interpret this as a warning if you select the wrong Device Type setting it could damage the motor, but I am not certain of this. So, I concluded that I must not simply try all of the settings one by one to see which works.
Other complications are : Although the paperwork on the sale of the motor says it is a MSM30, could they have possibly sent me the HSM30? Unfortunately there is nothing printed on the motor designating a model number. I did open the motor housing up a bit and saw that the motor is a PF25-48q1 (https://www.nipponpu...ppers/PF25-48Q1) and this indicates that it is a bipolar motor and could this mean that this is actually an HSM30 as I think that the MSM30 is a unipolar motor?
