Can I put star sense explorer on my old C5?  I can buy a new 80mm refractor with star sense explorer for $180 from Costco.  Can I take the unit off the refractor and mount it on my old C5?  I'd probably want to move the red-dot finder too.

Or, is it possible to buy just the star sense explorer (new with code) somewhere?

Has anyone done this?  I don't find anything in this beginners forum after a quick search.

Plenty of people have done that with their larger dobs.

Only issue I can see with a C5 is with a dew shield on, is there enough space up there to hold a phone mount? You may need to go with the magnet holding method too, as I'm not sure where to mount the thing exactly...

For your C5, what mount/tripod are you currently using? Another option is to buy a DX version (albeit more expensive) and share the mount between the C5 and 102mm/130mm scope. That makes more sense if you want a new mount + spare scope.

And no, unfortunately Celestron doesn't sell just the phone mount + code separately

I made a base out of 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood for a Star Sense Explorer off an LT 80AZ, so now it can be used in any scope with a Synta-style accessory shoe. Wasn't difficult at all. waytogo.gif
