Hi everyone,

I finally got a look at Mars after a long, long time--I won't bore you with the sad tale.  It is a tough observation with Mars at 6.5 arcseconds but still worth a try.  I made this sketch in the house based on a field sketch using a 2B pencil, a stump, and powdered color pencil applied with a Q-tip.  I made a short observation report here.

It's great when this happens Mike. And it's your .35arc sec res versus my 1.1!!! That explains that nice uneven edge you picked up of the maria. A curious thing is that darker vague sports in the middle of the desert. It kept reoccurring to me but so ghostly, but again it shown. I thought it mightve been the effects of a small orb. Great work. Pete

Thanks for the comments and likes, everyone.  flowerred.gif

Frank, that sounds like my seeing for the past month.  tongue2.gif

Thanks, Pete--I actually missed some detail on Cimmerium (and Hesperia), but I plead teeny tiny image.  lol.gif   At first I didn't know what to make of that dusky area either.  I had not previewed Mars before my observation and have sort of been out of touch with what side Mars was presenting (except for your sketches posted here), so I had to study what I was seeing for a while.  Once I realized that the dark albedo feature was probably Cimmerium, I figured that the dusky area were those vague features around Elysium (Hyblaeus Extension, Cerberus, Trivium Charontis), and was really there.  Elysium is often bright, but not this time.  Here is an image by Frank Mellilo made at 0110 UT (9:10 PM EDT on the 30th) that shows those vague features.

Michael, I saw that same diffused shading back when it was around 12". Mellilos nice image adds a Z shape, interesting. Gotta say my colors I draw thus apparition are rather averaged put as I'm always using filters like a neo or lt. Magenta. Plead teeny tiny will you. P.
