I am planning to drive from Phoenix Arizona to Evansville Indiana for the 2024 Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024. The reason for Evansville is that my nephew has offered free lodging at his large house. If the weather is bad for Evansville I can drive to an area on the eclipse path where the weather is clear.

I drive a Toyota Prius that gets 50 MPG on the highway. There will be a motel stop on the way to Indiana and on the way back in the middle part of the country and I usually use Super8 motels.

I can take one other person with me to split the cost of the gasoline. I live in Phoenix. If you are close enough to Phoenix I can pick you up, or if you are located on the way to Indiana I can pick you up.

I would contact the Tucson astronomy club.  They are supposedly huge with 500 members, at least from what I recall in an article I read.

I grew up near Evansville and was a very active member in the Evansville Astronomical Society until I moved. I also used to work at the Evansville Museum.

Good luck with this.  I've been asking around for over a year now to find a travel buddy to get from Maryland to New Mexico for the Annular Solar Eclipse on October 14.  Most people are just not interested in eclipses, and even if they are remotely interested in eclipses, they are not interested in traveling to see an eclipse.  This applies to hard-core astronomers as well as everyday folk.  I don't know what the deal is but people who do their observing at night don't like to come out in the daytime even for an eclipse.  I love doing daytime astronomy.  It's a lot warmer and there's no dew!  I think part of the problem is that people have work or school or other commitments.

 

If anyone wants to carpool from Maryland to New Mexico for the Annular Solar Eclipse on October 14, I can still offer a ride.  I'm a bit nervous traveling across the country by myself.  I've never been west of the Mississippi River before so the American Southwest is a strange and exotic place that you only read about in books or see in movies.

I have driven alone across the country five times in my life. It is just that I am now retired on a fixed income and really need a partner to help split the trip expenses.
