Bear in mind that the RV-6 has a lot of metric bolts on the motor box. I don't know about the 10".  I can check my 10" Dynascope drive box and DEC worm assembly for metric the next time I hit the barn. Some of the RV-6 (not very many) use a 4mm allen wrench for the set screws that hold the back plate to the RA housing.

Soak the allen set screws in penetrating oil. Clean out the socket hole where the allen wrench goes, even if damaged. You can grind the end off of an 'easy out' till it has maximum grab in the existing socket. Some people give horror stories on using easy outs.  Some experience helps but a lot is gut feeling to stop before you break one off. In the case of an allen head screw, it wouldn't be as bad to chip out the remains of a broken custom sized easy out. Try to get a LEFT turn drill bit if you have to drill them out.  A left hand bit might turn the screw out while drilling, it often happens.

For breaking old fasteners loose we have found nothing that beats Corrosion-X! Shake it up. Shoot it into the holes. Let it sit fir a while. Maybe use a light lead mallet to send some shock waves through it and the Allen screws should work loose. Just remember to wiggle the threads back and forth slowly. Loosen and tighten until the bond is completely broken. Then just to keep clearing the threads.

If that fails then heat is the next best answer. Use a propane torch to warm the area around the fastener. Then cool it with Corrosion-X. Eventually, the bond will be broken and the screws will come out.

We've had such success with these methods that I cannot even remember when we last had to drill out a seized bolt or screw.

FWIW

I have had both, It depends on what year the Cave was made. Normally a Cave is a stunning scope, but were known for some underperforming optics in their last few years.
I have a Cave 8" F7 and it is simply superb! My Dyna was very good but it couldn't beat my Cave.
You would be happy with either.

Sam,

Very impressive to integrate (what I believe is a (Cave pedestal) for the Dynascope Deluxe

Those Deluxe don't move very easy out of the pedestal or in the pedestal for that fact.

SamTheMan "...you've all seen the ugly, gray mottled paint job on the tube"

I rather doubt you'll find many here that will agree with that statement.

deSitter: "I liked the grey paint with the pebbly finish - it was so characteristic of

these scopes. They had a 50s diner sort of vibe."

I completely agree with deSitter's comments here.

SamTheMan: "This scope has sat stored in its original shipping crate for 34 years!"

34 years, with original paint... sanded down and painted white.

The horror. THE HORROR!

Personally, this is one of my all-time favorite telescopes. Too acquire one in

the condition you received yours would be a scope-dream come true for me.

Too be clear, this is your scope . I have absolutely no problem with you

doing anything, you care to do, with this very cool classic telescope.

Just honest opinions/reactions here.

Great score.

I must agree. Beautiful scope in its original state. Restored one a while back. OTA was in need of next to nothing. Came with the shipping crate too. I was overjoyed. Check out the posting.

Yup.  That's the pedestal from my 137-lb Cave mount. Incredibly, the pedestal and legs only weighed 26 lbs..

Comments. Tough! Not everyove loves an ugly duckling.

I think the Dynascope was the ugliest scope ever made.

Now it's beautiful like it should have been in the first plae.

First, the Dynascope finish is neither pebble nor crinkle. See the pics.  The 3rd pic is gray crinkle spray p[aint. The texture on the can looks like tiny pebbles.

Crinkle paint dries with randomly sized and shaped raised edges.

Look closely at pic 2. At first, it looks like crinkle paint, however, if you examine a smal area 1-2 inches in diameter, you will see repeating shapes, much like small scraters with 4-6 raised edges with a flattened interior.

So, why did Criterion select this paint finish?

It was to hide the spiral edges of its spiral-wound paper tube.

In pic 1, a CN'r states that the original price for my Dynascope 8 was $595.00.

So, for $595.00 you got a "crete" tube that costs about $10.00

To remove the rough finish, I discovered that I couldn't just sand it away.  Once the finish was gone, I hit paper which refused to become finely sanded...only torn and frayed.  Si, I painted the tube with several layers of hard acrylic paint, waiting a day between spraying to be sure the paint was dry and hard.  Then, I carefully sanded down through the layers of spray paint until I had achieved a uniform and fine finish over the entire surface of the tube.  The whole process took me at least 40 hours, but worth it.

The result is not wonderful, however, I like it much better than it was.  However, I am considering selling the OTA and mounting my 8" F8 Cave Astrola on the Dynascope mount.  The Dynascope mirror performed ok in initial tests, but, I suspect that it's a 1/2 mark off the quality of my Cave mirror.  I plan to test both side-by-side at Mt. Baker WA this coming Summer.

just me Sam

I won't be keeping the  Dynascope OTA .

The Dynascope mount is superior to what I had, so I combined my 8" F8 Cave Astrola, the Dynascope mount, and my Cave pedestal and created this.

BTW, notice anything strange about the tube rings?

The Dynascope was 5/8" smaller in diameter than my Cave3 tube, so I cou7ldn't use the rotating rings.

I was using a 8" F6 cave Astrola on  Meade GEM.  The tube rings were an "ok" fit.

I've listed the Meade GEM and retained the Cave 8 F6 and the Meade tube rings, whcich fit the Dynascope ED cradle perfectly "when turned upside-down.

LOL

Can someone tell me what the motor RPM is for the 8" Deluxe, before I start the hunt? Mine is dead and I know it's not the original. Thanks
