We were going to sit this one out, but both of us got the urge yesterday to go to a beautiful city on the Pacific coast of Mexico for a week. Hotel on the beach about 14-15 miles from centerline. Good enough. We just have to walk a few yards to the beach from our room. 2% chance of clouds. No equipment this time other than an 8x40 bino with Baader film filters. My simplest total eclipse since my first one in Colombia in 1977. Beach chairs and umbrella drinks for the two of us.

That sounds great. It's a workday for us so international travel seemed too daunting. But I'm sure domestic airlines can hang us up somehow, too. Have fun!

Hi Paul,

Talk of airline snaffus on our vacation is prohibited! We're going 6 days early, just in case! cool.gif

It's very much on my mind. The Friday before is also a workday for us, so this will be a quick trip for us. You're very wise to go 6 days early. Not just to avoid snafus. Six days on the beach sounds awesome.

Yeah, it's kind of a beach vacation with a bonus! I'll have a Mai Tai for you.

I mean, I'd be lying if I hadn't spent the last 20 minutes looking at flight schedules.

I booked months ago in Mazatlan but no flight availability from London yet - early April starting to become available.  I plan to fly AeroMexico (which I have never used before) whick takes us (3) from London, through Mexico City to Mazatlan and back in a good schedule.  Every other airline I have to circumnavigate the world to get there... If all works out we will arrive on 5 April.

I had flown Aeromexico before, great service indeed.  I remember back in 2017 while working in Los Cabos I hurt my knee. I didn't wanted to be hospitalized in Mexico so I flew back home and traveled with Aeromexico.  On my connecting flight in Mexico City airport they had some personnel ready waiting for me with a wheelchair to move me to my next flight. I will always be grateful for that.

Yeah, ours went from just under $600 to just under $800 round trip in one day. I backed off leaving the day after the eclipse because that was $1500. Leaving on the 10th instead of the 9th dropped it back to the $800 realm. Jeez...

We booked the Hotel Tramonto on Avenida Playa Gaviotas (great location!) a few months back for $225CDN per night, when it was the only hotel on Booking.com that was open a year prior to the event. Talking to the Doubletree by Hilton (where we stayed for a scouting trip last February) they were willing to rent us a room but for $525CDN a night versus $200 in Feb. We just booked Westjet to Maz via Calgary for about $500 less than we paid in February, I guess April isn't high season.

We loved Mazatlan, great city, felt very safe everywhere, everything very walkable from the Malecon. Coming back for the eclipse is gravy, we'd probably be back anyway!

My wife and I are getting our passport photos taken tomorrow.  I would encourage those traveling to Mexico to not wait too long if your passports have expired.

Passport update:  Our trip to the post office for passport photos went off without a hitch.  We were told that it is taking 10-13 weeks for renewals.  It takes longer for someone who has not had a passport before.

I hope that folks who go to Mazatlan take a metric crap-ton of photos, not just of the eclipse, 'cause I don't know if I'll ever get there.

Will do- just for you.  wink.gif

I'm looking forward to the building excitement in the hotels.  The Geek Fest there is going to be epic.

It's a beautiful drive.. Should be about 2 days each way.

It is a nice drive, but not enough vacation time to add a couple of more days. Beach time is more critical than drive time, just ask my wife!

Nope, I wouldn't travel alone, or with 2 people, for 2 days in Mexico these days, some parts are far too dangerous. The tourist areas are safe enough, so stay there.

For Canadians, we just booked WestJet from Winnipeg through Calgary to Mazatlan, no problem, cheaper than when we went there in February!  Off-peak I guess.

Now that it's June, new air options are becoming available.  Southwest Airlines is now a more-affordable possibility for me.

Finally booked flights to Mazatlan for next year...not very cheap and a long journey for us (3 people) from London, via Mexico City to Mazatlan.  Arriving 9:30AM on Friday 5th.  See you there!
