Recently davidmcgo posted about a vintage C4 Celestron Telephoto lens that he picked up on ebay from the blue and white era, but in a black barrel that I have never seen examples of.  Coincidently I lucked into a blue and white Celestron  C10 OTA that was clearly built to be used as a lens.  I have never seen an example of such an OTA outside a black and white ad in Bob Piekiel's book.

From what I learned the previous owner picked this up from an auction when an aerospace company closed, with the hope to use it as a telescope. However he was a novice the focus knob was frozen and there was no mount.  The scope then sat collecting dust for a decade when he sold it to me.

This  C10 is number 227 and appears to be a later version with some interesting differences from earlier blue and whites so I thought to share this with classics group.

Overall its in good shape considering the age but the tube is scratched up with a few small dents, some extra holes were drilled in the castings for unknown attachments now gone and a decade or more of grunge.  The focuser is part of the tri-spindle and all three bearing have dried out grease.  As there is no way to clean and repack the bearings without taking the OTA apart I thought to document the process and use this forum to seek help as well.

The corrector had water spots and dust but no damage.  The serial number 227 is located at 11 o'clock which seemed to me to be wrongly indexed? But the retaining ring and corrector were tight so it did not spin.  The glass looks like its not plate and is edged very nicely.  Without cleaning the dirt its hard to say but it looks to have a light blue anti-reflection coating which was a surprise on a blue and white

Pulled the mirror and focusing mechanism.  The mirror is indexed and was at the 3:00 o'clock position.  The serial number matches 227 and there appears to be a name written on the back of the mirror

I know that the original orange tube C8 was designed to be removed from the forks and attached to a photo tripod using and adapter block that looks similar to what you show above. It’s even described in the manual. Just like the sand cast forks, the adapter block was cast and a fairly solid piece of kit. It would take a fairly substantial tripod to hold the complete assembly.

Neat stuff.

The blue and whites that were fork mounted did not come out of the for with the spindles being part of the tube.  No real way to de-fork and use that way.  The radius block on mine was mounted to the tube not to the back casting and bolted from the inside of the OTA.  It was built for being mounted horizontally on what would need to be a massive tripod

Found what looks like a name on the mirror back besides the index mark and the serial number.  Anyone familiar with the optician names that worked at Celestron back then? Maybe this was custom made for someone?

Wow, that's neat! It's interesting how everything evolves. This is an example of the tripod adapter for the orange tube C8...

It is very similar to yours, but you can see the sculpting along the back edge to fit over the rear cell casting and the bolt patter that matches the fork mount. The original owner added a couple of 1/4-20 holes. The Plan is to add a small Vixen rail so that I have the option of using it with a variety of mounts.

Neat stuff.

I have quite a few C4s, C10s. I do have a C10 telephoto as well

Thats a lot of blue and whites.  But I dont see the OTA what serial number is yours.

Mine is now ready for re-assembly as I had the tube repainted

Got it, Ever compare all these blue and whites against one another?  Trying to figure out how to mount my OTA with the tripod foot.  Probably have a custom radius block made so I can nount the whole OTA to a dovetail

I haven't compared them...yet, but they're all excellent individually based on their performance. Tom Johnson and the Celestron team ran the gamut of tests on each optic that came out. As far as mounting, I'd use rings and losmandy plate. Using a radius block would work but wouldn't be optimal.

I have been searching for rings that fit the tube OD in vain.  Have you found a set of rings that fit the OTA?

I haven't looked, I can go take ota OD and dimensions and look what's available. If nothing, I can machine some since I have access to a machine shop.

You can make custom rings of almost any diameter without a lot of expense and trouble.  Take 5/8 or 3/4 plywood and cut inner circles, then the outer part to whatever shape you wish..  Surround each with stainless 1/2" x 0.030" perforated strap used for hose clamps.  You can buy up to 15 foot lengths on Ebay for not much.  I have used a pair to put a 90mm SCT on a 125mm SCT.

If you worry that you might dump your scope by having the retaining clasp let go, you could put small brads through the perforations where the strap overlaps.  For heavier optical tubes, use 1 inch plywood and two straps per ring.  That should cover almost any situation.

My 1967 model c-10 in my avatar pix has a c-4 on an adjustable bracket that Celestron made for it.  No need for straps in that setup.
