Hi, yesterday I could finally try the Panoptic 22 I bought with my Dobson 200 (f6). The issue was that 2/3mm intra-focus were missing by using the 1,25inch. Of course I could get to focus by using the 2inch, but as all my other eyepieces are 1.25inch, it was nit convenient. Thanks to the forum, I found this old topic:

It was easy and fast, of course take your time and be very careful.

Nice work.

I use my 22 mm Panoptic as a 1.25 inch only eyepiece.

One thing to keep in mind is that the barrel is quite long so if you're using a 2 inch filter threaded to a 1.25 inch - 2 inch adapter, the barrel may contact the filter, potentially damaging it.

As Jon says - a long barrel now. Anyone using a diagonal is likely to find 'contact'!

You could perhaps add a parfocalising ring so that the barrel was 'normal' length.

With a 2 inch diagonal plus and adapter, contact is very unlikely, it barely extends past the adapter. In a 1.25 inch diagonal, I don't know.

I've considered having a machinist shorten the barrel to normal length.

Thanks Jon, good point. I am not using yet 2inch filter, maybe one day. I can see that it will be same issue with the Radian, the length of 1.25inch is the same

Easy solution.  Ad a barrel extender to the 2" adapter so the filter is moved farther from the eyepiece.

I use a 14mm Fine Tuning Ring on my short 2" adapter for just that reason.

Just realized there a good reason to buy (some?) Radians.

I have a pair of 22 Pans, these are the heaviest bino pair in my collection, if I remove the 2" skirt how much weight reduction will result? Any idea?

Based on actual second hands prices, Radians are a very good deal. The 6 is absolutely fantastic on lunar and planetary. Only 60 degrees, but absolutely perfect to my eyes.

Tonight, I have tried the Panoptic 22 without the 2inch barrel… no more issues to get focus

Should work!.

I use 2" from 40mm to 9mm and then 1-1/4" for the 7mm and 4.8 Nagler.  Mine are all Panoptic, Type 1 or 2 Nagler. I do have an oft maligned 15mm Pan but it gets little use since the 16mm Nagler arrived.

Might have to think about converting 22mm down to 1-1/4" if it's possible for all of them.   That would leave the 40mm TMB and 27mm Panoptic as only 2"ers. hmmm.

Steve:

The 22 mm Panoptic is the only TeleVue 1.25-2 inch eyepiece with a removable skirt.

I use mine a part of a set that includes the 16 mm Type 5 plus all the type 6s except to 2.5 mm.

Jon,

Thank you for the heads up.  I've thought about going with the newer Naglers for 1-1/4" in the short fls.  Still like the old school eyepieces enough to keep them and since I obverse sans glasses no need for the other long eye relief designs yet.

Things change though, thanks again.

Steve

Hi, I just checked this morning my 2inch x 1.25inch reducer with the Panoptic and Radian… I can see that a 2inch filter can be used safely. Therefore, I will buy one second hand Astronomik UHC I found from one German Astronomer. Life will be better, compare to screw/unscrew the filter when changing eyepieces. Then will buy the OIII.
