"the silly rules"

NO POLITICS // NO RELIGION // NO ARGUMENTS // NO OVERINFLATED EGOS

"If your some sort of nut living in your mom’s basement and looking to feel important about some nonsense your inventing or product you are pushing...

This is not the place for you. Go away.
All your friends are over at CloudyNights or IceInSpace"

Management

That is incredibly insulting and dismissive.

I'm sure Galileo, Copernicus, Newton et al all once lived with their mother.
They were all at some point deemed "nutters".

Once you try and constrain the type of person "allowed to do science" then we're headed for the dark ages once more.

With argument denied there is no freedom of speech.

The "silly rules" are emphatically silly.

I can't join the place to air my views as argument is denied.

There is much good stuff over there, but the outright derision of CN by "the management" has seriously annoyed me.

I'm glowing so red I'm nearly "on band"!

I saw glances of amazing sun detail today through my Quark.. Here in UK was "milky blue" sky at best. I spent 4 hours bending over EP waiting for magic. All I got was a sore back.

Note to self - buy a stool or platform shoes!

Please research S.A.A and you will see one reason for that.

They're right about one thing. All my friends ARE over here. Don't know anything about those folks, but the success of any forum is measured by it's membership. They need me more than I need them (which is not at all).

I'm curious and (thankfully?) out of the loop re' what this is. I Googled "SAA web site" and landed on a couple of rather disturbing albeit humorous hits. I added the conditional "astronomy" and think I found it. If I get the gist of the discussion, I have a ~similarity~. About a decade and two ago, I was a very active member of a "creative writing" forum. Within 15 years I composed and contributed about 1500 short stories, essays and poems --- well received, "a good time was had by all". But the site ever so gradually morphed into more and more political squabbling --- from good humored to rather nasty to downright sophomoric battles... which sucked the oxygen and enthusiasm out of the most creative, prolific, and productive members. The best began to bow out; within a few years the site degenerated into a mere shell of what it was. I finally left and --- came here!    Tom

SAA is sci.astro.amateur which was originally Usenet (and still is if you can still find an NNTP server) - which predates the world wide web and HTTP - but now the most common mode of access is Google Groups. Like all newsgroups it was completely unmoderated, so eventually the trolls, spammers, and nut cases came to dominate it.

Well NuovaApe,

You may be mollified to know that Solarchat had zero scopes set up at Neaf this year.
You were unofficially represented by the Daystar guys and I was the lone Cloudy Nights member with a solar scope.

Hi,

Don't sweat the fine print. It's just there because there's been a lot of foolery over the years on all sides.

The crucial thing is that it's one of the only places with the best information for DIY and custom solar equipment and experiments and it's allowed.

Cloudynights forbids discussion of modding commercial solar equipment these days and its in the rules (it was not always this way...). So other resources are important to have that are open to anyone.

At the end of the day, both are good resources depending on what you're looking for. Don't polarize anything nor fall into politics, it just loses valuable information.

Very best,

Any website,  blog, forum, etc., that is "Privately Owned", including CN, is NOT bound by any 'freedom of speech' guarantees,  nor should they be.  On CN, they have a rather complete Terms Of Service,  for Classifieds,  Fora, Photos,  etc. Not a single one of us can violate those terms without being booted off CN!  No one FORCED us to join!  If CN, or any other privately owned site,  had in their TOS,  that members were not permitted to use the word "automobile", they have every right to do so! And, by agreeing to the TOS of that site, you give up a y right to say 'automobile' without risking expulsion.

Free speech/freedom of speech,  as guaranteed by the Constitutions of the Federal government,  and State governments,  ONLY refers to PUBLIC places, areas, spaces, venues, and certain buildings,  NOT to those that are privately owned, by businesses or individuals.

I think this gets away from the point that the OP was making. The point is arrogance and not terms of service.

Imagine a world where just one person / one individual user could change an entire industry with just one link full of pictures, and that one person gave it all away for free without even asking for donations.  Then imagine that person being kicked off the internet so nobody could see that industry changing event.  It  can be the greatest thing, or the worst thing depending who is more popular.

I have found a Solarchat to be a very helpful kind and supportive place. I’m fine with “silly rules” like “speak nicely” and “leave your ego at the door”.

Each private forum has their own rules for members. One still has the right to decide if they wish to join or not, but if they decide they will join, then yes, one has to abide by the rules of said forum.

Nothing good can come out of this topic since it discusses another forum which we cannot influence and should not attempt to influence, so I’m locking this one.
