Messier 4

Messier 4 v2

I spent some time on M4 last month. It's a distinctive and interesting GC. The nebulosity in the cluster ended up brighter than I wanted. Also included is a second version with it toned down a bit in post. It was fun to sketch. If you click on them the larger versions show more.

This is the first sketch of M4 I've seen that shows what I call is the Bell X1 jet shape in the middle of the core that is easy to see in a 10" scope at 150x or more.  I'm surprised more sketches don't show this figure.  The figure is best seen if you double click on the sketch.

Thanks so much! I spent a while trying to place the stars as accurately as I could.

Thanks to Tom and Michael too.

You guys who sketch these objects have my admiration. It’s old school and I love it . You actually get the best of both worlds ; you do visual and get an image to keep. One thing about pure astrophotographers is that they never really look through an eyepiece; a shame in my opinion. Now I love their pretty photos but it just seems so impersonal.
Keep up the great work and keep sharing.

Thanks for your encouraging words! Sketching definitely has some of the best elements of both worlds.
