Thanks for this Karl.  The sketch of M101 was very helpful as it approximates what I'm likely to see given the Bortle 4.5 site that I use.  Hope to see it tonight!

Ah, it's not a sketch. NearView is a technique of using a combination of actual images from sky surveys and the use of Corel PaintShop Pro. Anyway, I hope you got an opportunity to see it. Here in Pennsylvania we are again dealing with the heavy smoke.

Thanks Karl.  I hope so, too!  We've got smoke issues here in NC as well.  Some forecasts have it abating this Friday when skies are supposed to be clear.  We'll see.  I'm sure transparency will be compromised in any event - not so good for 101 itself.  And thanks for the information on NearView.  I had no knowledge of it.  Very useful for observing session preparation I would think.

I was observing with Karl that night.  I was definitely able to see SN 2023ixf with my Celestron 20x80 binocular and am fairly certain that I saw it with my Canon 15x50 IS binocular.  In addition to the 4" refractor and 22" Dob, my 10" Sky-Watcher Collapsible Dob provided some good views of SN 2023ixf.
