I will be viewing the solar eclipse from the western shore of White Rock Lake in Dallas with family that live there. We have friends in the Grosse Point Michigan area that have a very nice boat.  I have advised them that if they motor their boat down to Toledo and then east into Lake Erie they can get close to or on the center line.  So a couple of questions-

1) What would be the typical weather expectation for Lake Erie on April 8th temperature wise?

2) Does anyone have any picture of a number of boats on a lake during a solar eclipse?  I think such a picture would convey to them the excitement that can be generated.

Thanks!

Barry

Barry:

I’m not sure how accurate this site is, but you can try https://weatherspark...a-United-States for temperature and other data (temps appear to average in the mid- 40s)

This quote from Jay Anderson’s site at https://eclipsophile.com/2024tse/ may be of interest:

“ The upshot of all of this is that lower elevations and a position on the south side of the larger lakes will give a greater likelihood of sunshine on eclipse day. With some interruptions, there is a band of lower cloudiness along the south shore of Lake Erie as far east as Dunkirk”

That being said: that is still a risky area for clouds. Any chance they could drive or rent a car to open up flexibility to escape from clouds, should there be some?

As for a previous eclipse on a lake, try a YouTube search for “Eclipse 2017 Lake Murray” and you’ll come up with examples like this:

https://m.youtube.co...WtlIG11cnJheQ==

You could also try the same search but change to Lake Hartwell

What about South Bass Island or one of the other islands?  It would be more stable viewing than a boat.  They look to be close to the center line but not on it.

I used to work at Presque Isle in Erie.  Unfortunately, the weather in April there will be highly variable and unpredictable until a few days out.

I'd worry about mobility if I needed to bolt due to weather.

Plus, South Bass Island will be *chilly* that time of year as Lake Erie's just starting to warm up from winter.  An April lake breeze is colder than the Cleveland Browns in the 4th Quarter.

Clear Skies,

Phil

My plan is to be in Erie for the event but opted for a hotel room Sunday night near New castle PA.  I'll have plenty of time to head north on I-79 from there, or head west on either I-76 or I-80 if weather dictates a change of location.

I observed the June 2021 Partial Solar Eclipse from Presque Isle Pennsylvania State Park.  I am planning to go back again for the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, weather permitting.

I had a similar concern.  It will be very difficult to get in or out of Presque Isle Pennsylvania State Park.  There is only one way in and one way out.  There was a long line of cars waiting to get in for the June 2021 Partial Solar Eclipse.

I got lucky and got a good rate at a hotel in Erie when reserved 366 days before the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse.  The very next day, 365 days before the eclipse, the rates tripled.

I just got a room at the Econo Lodge in Meadville PA for less than $100.  According to Booking.com, they still have a few rooms left.  Meadville is in the path of totality for 2 minutes and 35 seconds.

Nice. Hope you have clear skies. Seems like only down south they are gouging. I'm camping in southern Illinois on the Mississippi for $14/night.

I had reserved a room a half hour south of the path for double the price, figured that was the best I could do.  Found this place in the path so I'll have a little more flexibility...and saved some money!

I’m staying in Youngstown and will go wherever is clear/less clouds. However if I can get away with it, I’d prefer not to go all the way to Erie/conneaut/Ashtabula. The exodus after the event back to Youngstown/Pittsburgh could be apocalyptic.

I grew up in buffalo and unfortunately, the weather is cloudy there most of the year.  We used to go months without seeing the sun in the winter.  Winter depression is a real thing there.
