I have just received a ASIAIR Plus and would like to connect it to my NexStar 6SE through WIFI.  I have been able to connect and control both items individually through my home WIFI and verify they both work.  However when I try to connect to my NexStar mount in the ASIAIR Plus application it will not connect.  Trying to figure out how to get this to work  Here is more background information:

Celestron Nexstar 6SE Mount

----------------------------------------

-SkyPortal WIFI Module attached and in the Access Point configuration

  -IP Address: 192.168.0.158

SkySafari Settings (Communications works fine, able to connect to mount)

    --Scope Type: Celestron Wi-Fi

    --Mount Type: Alt-Az Goto

    --Communication: Access Point

AISAIR Plus Configuration

-----------------------------------

  Station Mode

  AISAIR Plus IP Address: 192.168.0.141

  Mount Settings

  --------------------

    Mount: Celestron NexStar GPS/SLT/SE

    Interface: Eithernet

    IP: 192.168.0.158

    Port: 4030 TCP

The only thing I can think of that might be incorrect is the TCP port number (4030) I have no idea what that should be for the WIFI, and haven't had any luck finding it online.

Hope someone out there may have some ideas.

Thanks!

James

Celestron Wifi uses port 2000, not 4030.

If the ASI folks were more on their game, they could auto-detect the port and IP address quite easily.  The Celestron and HomeBrew dongles use regular UDP packet broadcasts to advertise this information for auto-discovery.

Thanks Aurora,

I just tried TCP with port 2000, and still not luck.  However I have not calibrated the telescope (I'm testing it indoors during the day) so not sure if that might be the issue.  I also tried connecting with the UDP options (not sure what that is or how it works) but no luck with that either.

By chance have you connected the ASIAIR + to a NexStar mount?

Thanks again for your input.

James

I tried without luck to connect via Wi-Fi to the mount of my AstroFI. ( it should be the same as the SkyPortal module) I solved using the USB connection.

Yes, I can verify the USB cable works.  Would really like to get the WiFi two work, but it's not looking good.

Perhaps you should contact the ASIAir makers, and ask if their product can connect to Celestron WiFi ?

There are two, completely different protocols used by Celestron telescopes:

1. "Nexstar" protocol, which is what one gets when connecting through a hand-controller.

2. "AUX" bus protocol, which is what Celestron WiFi provides, the same as a direct serial/USB connection to the mount.

The suspicion is that ASIAir likely only does number (1) above.

Just an update to this topic.  I had opened up a ticket with ZWO on this problem when I opened this tickets.  They were VERY slow in response but finally did respond.  Wanted to know if I was using the Celestron WiFi adapter, and I responded that yes it was.  Here is there response:

ahh !!!!
yup that is a problematic device - we have never been able to get it work right with that adapter sorry
so sadly you'll be stuck with a cable to mount HC vs WiFI

thanks

Simon

Seems like a classic case of "blame the other vendor"... Anyway, that is their official response to the issue.  So looks like we are stuck using a cable to control the unit.

What baud setting are you using?  If you're not at the slowest setting, try slower.  The Celestron WiFi adapter can't go any faster than the AUX bus.
