Hello All,

For anyone who does not have a place lined up yet for where to view the eclipse, the Texas Star Party is hosting a 4-day eclipse event and star party at the Latham Springs Camp and Retreat Center near Waco, Texas.   We will have 4 minutes and 23 seconds of totality.  Please keep an eye on the TSP website: https://texasstarparty.org (texasstarparty dot org).  Registration will open soon.

We hope you will join us!

May I ask if there will be a TSP at Prude Ranch next year or will the Eclipse party replace it for the year? Thanks in advance!

Winstar, we are working on getting the TSP website up and running so that we can open registration for the eclipse event.   It should be any day now.   Please keep an eye on:  https://texasstarparty.org.

Hello KO6ZC,

So sorry, but no pets are allowed at the Latham Springs facility.   If you are traveling and will have pets with you, maybe you could leave them in a near-by kennel and visit them each day.    I myself have a German Shepherd who will be in the kennel during the eclipse event.

Thank you,

Christina LeGrand

To KO6ZC - an updated note about pets at Latham Springs for the TSP eclipse event: pets in RVs are allowed.   Dogs are allowed out on leashes only to do their "business", and there are some other restrictions like not approaching people when you have your dog with you.   No pets are allowed on the observing fields, or in any of the Latham Springs buildings.   All of this will be on the TSP website in the coming days and weeks.   Thanks, Christina

Hi,

I'll be part of TSP this year (with family), booked at registrations opening, payment went through, but did not receive a confirmation email yet.

Hello Space Time Pictures,

Thanks for the note - glad you all will be with us for the eclipse next year!    Our system is working regarding taking payments and logging registrations, but the confirmation emails have not gone out yet.   There were some issues found that need to be fixed.   For example, instead of displaying the accommodation type ("hotel room", "RV slot") a person has, the script is printing out a number, which of course would not make any sense to anyone.

We hope the issues will be fixed soon and that we can start sending out the confirmation emails shortly.    If you have any concerns about your registration going through, please send me a PM through Cloudy Nights and I can ask our boss to check into it.  He can verify that your payment went through successfully, and that your accommodations are logged in our system.

Thanks very much,
Christina LeGrand

Do you have WiFi or any internet access at the Latham Springs location?

Hello Jeff7500,

Yes, the host site, Latham Springs, has internet.   The current speeds of upload and download, from what we know, are 10 mbps.  Latham Springs management is checking with the internet service provider to see if that can be increased during our event.    We don't have an answer on that yet.

Also, too, please keep in mind that the facility is huge, so internet and wi-fi might be limited to certain main areas.   I will try to get more info about this, at least what is known now, and will post again if I find out anything of significance.

Thank you!
Christina LeGrand

I have the same question - planning 2024 vacations.

Guys, we don't have an official answer from our management yet that we can share, but there should be some news coming out in a few days on this topic!   I will post here at that time.   Thank you, Christina LeGrand

Guys, we have an official answer from our management - yes, we are planning to have a "regular" Prude Ranch TSP next year!    The dates are May 5th to the 12th.   Registration will be on the TSP website, but it is not active yet.

Please keep in mind that we don't know what kind of turn-out we will have both from attendees and volunteers, given the eclipse event the previous month.  I personally will be working and attending the eclipse event and not the Prude event.   I can't afford to do both.

We don't have any more details at the moment about the "regular" TSP at the Prude Ranch, but I will post on Cloudy Nights once registration is open.

Thank you for your patience while we got the official answer!

Christina LeGrand

Guys, one last note.   As with any TSP event, if not enough people sign up or if there are not enough volunteer staff to work the event, it is possible the event could be cancelled.   So please keep this in mind when making plans.   I would imagine that there will be volunteers like myself who can attend and work only the eclipse event.  Attendees might be able to get time off from work for only one of the two events and they might choose the eclipse.   This could result in not enough funding for the May event to go forward.   So please be aware of this!

Thank you,

Christina LeGrand

Thank you Christina - hopefully there will be enough interest for the Prude Ranch event to go ahead.

Hi,

My wife and I just signed up for the TSP eclipse event/star party.  We are looking forward to it. Quite expensive for tent camping ($1328 for 4 nights for the two of us).  I hope there are enough other people signed up for this particular eclipse event/star party for it to go forward.

Best,

Alan

Hello All,

I am sorry to inform everyone that the "regular" Texas Star Party at the Prude Ranch in west Texas is cancelled for 2024.   There is not enough interest to hold the event, making it not financially feasible.   There is also an issue of having enough volunteers to work the event.  A lot of us are attending and working the eclipse event and cannot do both.

I am really sorry - I know how much everyone loves TSP.  But due to these issues, we will not be able to host that event next year.

Thanks, everyone,

Christina LeGrand

Thanks for posting this Christina. So I presume from your statement there are enough people attending for the TSP eclipse event?
