Europa's shadow is currently about halfway across the disk of Jupiter.

Europa is very close to beginning its transit.

The GRS is also transiting Jupiter.  I’m observing the events using the Naylor Observatory’s 17” f/15 classical Cassegrain at 170x.

The GRS is predicted to transit the CM at 11:53 PM EDT.

The shadow transit is almost over and the GRS is on Jupiter’s CM.  I’ve used magnifications of 116, 170, 185, and 216x and aperture masks of 10, 12, and 14 inches, and full aperture.  The 14” mask and a magnification of 185x provided the best views.  I also tried a light blue filter to enhance the GRS but I preferred the unfiltered view.

Scope is still out on my deck.  Unfortunately, Jupiter still picking up thermals from my neighbors house (i need a SE puff of air to strip it away).  Saturn on the meridian was rock steady, i hope i can stay awake for Europa’s egress, should be good by then.

Observing report: Well i was out till 3:30 so paying for it and the prior night today.  That was quite a show with Europa pacing the GRS.  Seeing here was 4.5/5, so it was easy to spot Europa mid transit (looked like a white cyclone). The most striking thing was when it was perched on the shaded limb, there was a white cyclone on the southern border of the north equatorial band that was presenting so much contrast it looked like an accent pillow or a piece of art nearly matching Europa’s brilliance but I’m sure that was accentuated by the darness of the NEB. There was also a string of nearby dark grey notches shaped like this but flipped 180 deg |__|.  One had a small brick colored cyclone in the center, most had  light colored cloud.  Not much going on between the NEB and NPR and the NPR was a mottled grey and a color that reminds me of the paint in my kitchen “fennel seed”.  Lastly, the South temperate band was very dark and i counted 3 individual bands below it and the SPR but not much in terms of ovals once Europa moved off the disc.

I could see the shadow transit starting around 12:23 Pacific time. I watched for nearly an hour. 

 

It took a good while before the GRS could be seen, but the presence of Io was obvious.

 

Seeing for me went back and forth more than usual. Ranging from bad to average to brief moments of good, but rarely excellent.

I was looking for a good one, thanks for sharing.  There’s that little red cyclone in the grey notch “festoon” on the s side of the NEB.  That bugger was small.  I also noticed the ovals adjacent to Europa and thats why i thought Europa was a cyclone at first (i totally forgot it was in transit after the shadow egress and I didn’t start observing till it was nearly gone because it was on my neighbors roof so i missed the Europa ingress.  The relatively blank NEB and NPR in the image is reassuring.  I’m not used to seeing that region so devoid of detail.  I was wondering if I was using too much power or if my collimation slipped.
