Good morning from the land of cows and chickens, I just bought a really nice almost complete 1955-56 Unitron 142 3" f/15.  One thing that is sorely needed is some sort of spreader/accessory tray to keep the legs from splaying out-it came with a chain, but I don't really trust that little chain to keep the legs in check.  I'd love to see what you have on your classic refractor, factory style or ATM style.  Show me what you got!  I just got a 3D printer to go with a small CNC machine, so I might even make a batch of them at some point if I come up with a good solution. Here's the mount up close . . . . . sorry for the messy background, just got it yesterday.

I have chains on several of mine, I can't tell from the photo but I think my chains are a little heavier. But chains are fairly strong - the weak point might be how they are attached.

Some of my tripods came with spreaders, if you need measurements/pictures I can help. Attached is a picture of a spreader I made for one, simply a circle with holes. I added hinges - I cut a piano hinge into pieces that were just as long as the width of the leg.

This mount has some really tiny c-hooks attached to the legs-I doubt they are the original ones.  Completely inadequate.

I had the Unitron wooden snap in tray on mine, but at times the spring-actuated snap clasps popped (released) which Imfound very worrisome. I added a heavy safety chain and no more worries.

Do you have a closeup picture of the snaps?  I'm probably going to make a 3 point spreader that a tray fastens onto when the tripod is open.

Unitron snap-in metal spreader bars on my Unitron. These could be reproduced rather easily. Hope this helps.

I really like what you did here-clever!  I'm gonna try to use my CNC X-Carve and see if I can make the parts-Easel seems to be pretty easy to use.

Outstanding! you solved the real problem, which is to enlist the tray as a tripod stiffener. I have found that such a thing is essential to have a sturdy platform for a long refractor. The tripod should strongly resist being torqued about its vertical axis. For that a stiff tray firmly bound to the legs is necessary. Good work!

Lots of possibilities here and Piggyback's pic (post #6).  If the spreader arms were left vertical, the tripod could still be folded for transport.

I made my spreader the way I did to solve stability issues - fine for leaving assembled around the homestead but must be disassembled for transport.
