Hi All,

 

I got this 80mm scope "SVBONY SV503 Telescope, 80ED F7 Telescope OTA with Focal Length 560mm, Compact and Portable Tube for Exceptional Viewing and Astrophotography" and plan to use it to visually observe the eclipse. It will be mounted parallel to other photographic equipment on the AP900 mount. What eyepiece would be a good match to see the inner corona, prominences in detail but yet still get the full eclipsed Sun? I am thinking something around 20mm FL and some wide field. What would be a good eyepiece choice?

Gert, visually the Corona is sometimes visible out to 5 or more Solar Diameters...

 

So, choose your eyepiece using a calculator like

Hello All,

 

I found a Nagler T5 16mm in the classifieds and will try that out (once the rain stops in CA) There is the interesting story going about it that it is a scaled 1.25inch of the famous Nagler 2inch 31mm. Our club scope used the 31mm and it had excellent views.

Corona is quite large 2° or 3°, you will see better with unfiltered binoculars. 8x42 and 7x50 are perfectly fine.
If you insist on telescope then a 32 mm Plossl.
Prominences are not that big, rarely larger than 1/20 of the solar disk. Choose an eyepiece that will show you the full solar/lunar disk plus a 20% margin around (0.8° to 1° field), an 8 mm with a 60° apparent field would be great.
