Just saw this: https://www.theweath...ools-going-dark

Seems to be for reasons of liability. They can't guarantee kids will keep their eclipse glasses on their faces and demonstrate common sense, even with instruction, so they are opting to close to avoid being held responsible.

Is this just Canada, or is this happening elsewhere too? May impact eclipse day outreach if some of you are planning that.

Schools around us here in the path in Texas built April 8th as a day off into the school years schedule. So they decided to take it off over a year ago.
The reason we have all been hearing is traffic congestion. Not wanting school busses to be held up by the extra traffic, etc.
Never heard anyone even suggesting it was a liability thing.

Good call, IMO.

As a humorous side note, scientists were catching some flack in 2017.  People were asking why they scheduled the eclipse on the first day of school- seriously.

As that CBC story said, it was the timing of kids leaving school during totality where they said they couldn't supervise them.  In Texas totality will be earlier in the afternoon where I guess the kids could be supervised (if the schools were open).

It's too bad the Canadian schools couldn't extend school hours a bit that day and organize safe viewing events.
