Dear Colleagues,

 

I am reaching out on behalf of ASPIRE ASTRO, a small research group dedicated to advancing the field of asteroid and variable star photometry. Our current project focuses on the observation (imaging) of a 14th magnitude asteroid through time-series imaging. Given the asteroid's approximately 24-hour period, we are seeking images captured over several hours over a few nights by individuals based in the United States or Asia. It is important to note that no prior photometric experience is required, as we will handle all processing and analysis in-house.

The technical prerequisites for participation are as follows:

• A telescope with an aperture of 8 inches or larger
• A monochrome 16-bit camera
• Usage of either a clear (no filter) or luminance filter
• Guided exposures ranging from 3 to 5 minutes, appropriately adjusted based on the telescope's aperture size
• Flat fields and darks to ensure optimal data quality.

 

Our aim through this collaboration is to accurately determine the period of this asteroid, which is currently not known with certainty. We are seeking good quality imaging data to support our research efforts. While we recognize the commitment and expertise such an initiative demands, we are hopeful for your voluntary participation.

Why not advertise this on AAVSO forums?? Not so much for the asteroid photometry, but for the stellar photometry, and I assume exoplanet work.

I'm teaching an observational astronomy class this semester in the (unfortunately very cloudy) Rochester, NY, region.  I'll show this to my students and find out if any are interested in joining the effort.

1) What is the target?

2) What is the range of dates you want data over?

3) Do you want light files submitted separate from BDF files or just final calibrated lights?

4) Expected magnitude range?
