Untreated iron tends to rust. The environmental conditions dictate the degree and speed at which this occurs. The image here is of an untreated 5.9kg Campo del Cielo. Aside from an initial cleaning at recovery, no other treatment has been applied. There is no evidence of Lawrencite disease; the oxidized areas are simply ordinary rust formed by atmospheric oxygen and accelerated by water vapor. I've left it untreated, with no effort to remove any chlorides, and no protective coating.
