This is a 12.4kg Campo del Cielo. It was recovered from a slightly different location than the 5.9kg specimen discussed in the previous post. Soon after arrival the piece began to show clear evidence of Lawrencite disease, with yellow-green globules forming across much of the surface. These were wiped off, the surface was then treated with protective oil. This proved to only be a temporary solution. Slowly but surely the globules began to reappear. A long term chemical bath was initiated, followed by a thorough soaking rinse in distilled water, and low temperature oven drying. When completely dry the piece received a generous application of G-96 brand gun oil. This oil contains anti-corrosive components, has outstanding penetration, and seals against the atmosphere. After allowing several days for the oil to penetrate wherever it could, the excess was wiped off. These procedures were done twenty years ago, and today the piece remains entirely free of rust or evidence of Lawrencite disease.
