Hey everyone,

 

I'm working through my script in EO and to the point where i'm reviewing exposure settings.

 

For partial eclipse, I can obviously test this with a full sun anytime to zero in my exposure, but for all the rest . . . .

 

How do you personally go about determining what exposures to use?

 

 

1.  Do you trust the default settings in EO based on your input telescope settings?

 

2.  Or do you use an external chart / calculator and modify them all??

I photographed the eclipse in 2017 and was happy with the settings I used there, so I will (I'm just getting started on EO as I had to wait for adapter cables to connect my micro PC to a monitor) compare what EO gives me with what I used in 2017. I did not use my Traveler in 2017, but did use the 7DII/500mm f/4L I will be using again this time, and will compare the settings for the full Sun from both and adjust accordingly. There are a number of references put out to compare to, including an excellent one by Fred Espenak that I reference as well.

Good info. 

I guess if your exact numbers (f-stop) aren't on the chart, you can use the Exposure Formula.  I can do that in excel.

You can also do it on your camera. Find the f/stop on the chart that is the closest, count the 1/3 (or 1/2, if you are using those) stops to get to the f/stop you are using; if you go up 2 clicks on the aperture adjustment, go up the same number of clicks on the shutter speed. Say you want to use f/9 at ISO 100. At f/8 on the chart, Bailey's Beads would be 1/4000 sec. Changing to f/9 (which would decrease exposure 1/3 stop) would require an increase of 1/3 stop on the shutter speed, which would get you to 1/3200 sec.
