Would I be correct in assuming this only works with Nikon lenses with manual aperture control?

Yes that looks correct. F(E) lenses wont work without electronics so those are out. F(G) lenses need a way in the adaptor to adjust the aperture. This adaptor does not appear to have a way of doing that. But both types will still work you will just be stuck with wide open aperture. More info on nikon f mount adaptors (non-astro):

 This is strictly not correct depending on what is the purpose and lens used. I am using a very similar adapter version, the ZWO Nikon T2 Adapter for ASI Cameras, with  my Nikon AFS 300mm f/ 4 PF which has an electronic aperture. If the Nikon camera was powered down in a normal way before the lens was dismounted, the aperture will stay wide open, which is really what you would want. For deep space imaging I use a front aperture (step down ring) that brings it down to f/4.5.  This gives much better star shape than using the native aperture, but might not be feasible for wider lenses. Autofocus and VR will of course not be active, but is not wanted. I use to set the switches to manual just to make sure. (If one really want to use the native lens aperture, a trick is to dismount the lens without powering off the camera or remove the battery from the body with the lens mounted and the desired aperture set, need to use depth of field preview, to keep the set aperture.)

 

For lenses with normal mechanical aperture controlled from the camera (G-type) it would be more tricky, but one can insert a little piece of plastic to jam the aperture lever open.

 

Manual focusing of an AFS lens can be a bit tricky due to the short focus throw, but quite doable. Only lenses that have focus by wire (not sure that applies to any F-mount lenses, perhaps AF-P) would be out of the question.

Only just found the replies. Not sure why the post got moved, but "whatever" as they say.

 

Otoien, thanks for your detailed description of your setup. I only have AF-S lenses or newer so might give it a go.

 

I was hoping this adapter might have had some smarts in it to control the aperture. We can all dream I guess.
