I changed strategy on taping vehicle lights this year after fighting with too many of them. Simply remove any and all reason to open your car at night, and keep your keys away from it. That way you don't have to do anything to your car. Something left in the car? Tough luck, wait until morning.

I do the same, although I do both, cover or disable lights and stow the keys in the tent at dusk, where they are not to be touched until morning. It does help to have a truck, so anything I may want in the night is set out in the back of the truck, which is not lit. That includes snacks, which caused me to embarrass myself one night about 15 years ago, an experience I never intend to repeat.

Pray, do tell.. Did it involve guests joining you from the woods?

lol Oh no...I was just hungry and trying to get a power bar from my truck and inadvertently hit the wrong button and the flashers went on. My first star party (not at Cherry Springs)  and I learned my lesson, stay out of the truck.

Here's a neat trick I learned from another CN'er (Chucky) in how to cover your car's outside mirror accent lights.

Go to a local Dollar store and buy two knit cap/beanies. Then slide them over the mirrors at night. They may get a little dewy but they will dry out the next day.

I remember one night a skunk came wandering in.  It walked between someone's legs while sitting on a chair.  As soon as it cleared him, he yelled out SKUNK! lol.gif  Then the brighter red lights came on to locate it before someone got a dose. grin.gif

Bears have also wandered onto the field looking for snacks.  Keep everything sealed and out of your sleeping quarters.

If you can't disable your car lights then please remove everything from your car that you'll need prior to dusk, otherwise you'll be lighting up a very dark field all night.

Don't keep your car keys in your pants pocket (you'd be surprised how many times key fobs have been pressed accidentally).

Red gaffer tape can mitigate things on your car with respect to small accent lights.

Please test and re-test at night prior to arriving.

Everything is noticeably brighter on the field than it is at home.

Good advice. My car came with 2 electronic keys and 1 normal, non-electronic key with no buttons, so I'll be taking the latter.

Test the key to be sure the locks themselves don't trigger anything.  My old 2002 Xterra has switches on the locks where a sequence will unlock the other doors.  Newer vehicles may trigger some lights, and even toot the horn. Just to be sure the computer won't activate the alarm system with the key.. waytogo.gif

A skunk paid a visit a friend's canopy tent at the park years ago.  Luckily, nothing bad happened.

Several years ago, a bear was on the southern part of the observing field.

This year's star party got me thinking that I have been doing tents wrong. A cold weather tent, such as an ice shelter, may be a better option. Online, I've seen a number of the Eskimo ice shelters in use at star parties, and they seem to make a lot of sense on paper. My current tent is light polyester fabric, with full mesh ventilation at the top. It did not retain any heat at all. For Ice shelters, the only issue is that they don't seem to come with a floor, and very few offer a floor as an accessory.

Just last fall 2023, a bear walked past me after dark while observing.  I shouted and it ran off.

Those ice tents are geared for ice fishing.  Of course they won't have a floor. grin.gif

Gonna be clear tonight and Saturday night at CSSP so yes it will chill off quite a bit. waytogo.gif

Waning gibbous moon at about 68% rising a little after 11PM.  At least it isn't a full moon. grin.gif

YES!  I'm still trying to get to CSSP sometime this weekend - but - I'm also engaged in the final details of replacing my *most important* piece of "astro-gear" -- my full-size pickup truck! And then it's also 'off to Stellafane' next Thursday morning - so I might miss what could be a great opportunity at Cherry Springs.

....but -- just listening to the local news and the weather guy said "we might get some western wild-fire smoke drifting into the region over the weekend...." so staying home to observe might not be all that much of a loss.

Yep, there is some smoke, but currently not all that bad..  I like to keep an eye on it here...

Thx for the smoke reporting link, Skywatchr.....will be around a "35" tonight in Central Maryland.  Will use as we get closer to Sept.  And, honestly, hope for the best when considering the lives of the folks that are more directly impacted out West. sad.png sad.png sad.png

Currently where I am at the sky is milky white and I am in the same "smoke zone" as CSSP.  So it's not looking the greatest.  After dark it will be somewhat better, until the Moon rises.  I think the Adirondacks would be better instead of going to CSSP..   Hope you got your new "Astro Gear" squared away. grin.gif

I could kick myself - but - too much 'other stuff' going on to travel right now, so I missed my chance to get to CSSP this weekend (July 27/28). A friend who did go just posted on FaceBook a beautiful 'Milky Way shot' from last night - with his little imaging rig in the foreground. He did note lots of bees attacking the fields of clover.

Next weekend looks like rain/storms/etc at Stellafane - and I won't have a cap on my new pickup yet anyway - so back to the 'little' C-9.25 Evo or 127mm APO for those few minutes of clear sky. I can't carry a premium Dob in an open pickup bed thru thunderstorms. Maybe I'll go down to Cherry Springs for the Perseid shower - dark late, when the meters should be good. Should be able to transport the 20" by then - or an imaging rig.

How soon after the Woodsman Show will the observing field be available to astronomers? I would like to arrive as close as possible to the new moon.

Thanks,

Bruce

Oh well. Another new moon at Cherry Springs lost. I haven't used my Galaxy Pass at all this summer and next month is BFSP.

Wah, Wah, Wah
