Here I want to show you latest run of Baader Mark V binoviewer.

For comparation I have old Zeiss binoviewer for comparation (down below), where you will see more greyish colour of body.
But why I put that binoviewer for comparation?

Its because previous Mark V production have absolutely same design and look of back middle part.

Here is new back painted look "under" the Zeiss T2 bayonet, which is middle part which comes across/ through whole inner binoviewer distance, while in previous version is grey colour.

So whats advantage here: stronger and smoother working system of IPD adjustment.

As you can see, new production have BLACK painted, and its very SHINY, so under some circumstances, it might cause some reflections. For those who will bother, just paint that part with black matt spray.

Also, new production have bit larger Clear Aperture opening, measured at 28.3mm, while previous version have it exactly 28mm.

Other openings stayed same, with limited inner Clear Aperture at 26mm.

New back side does not have any thread as you can see, while older version have it, and on older version you can screw on directly 1.25" filters and other accessories - yes, for some it is advantage.

Look at binoviewer inner, left side (depending from which angle you positioned bino looking), new one have CNC machined body (left), and not molded or not sure which is correct word, like on previois model showed on right.

Why older version making is not that good?

Because I often saw some holes/air pockets inside metal, and even on metal edges, as imperfections.

Meaning new model is stronger, and better there.

Here is another opened wing side comparation: left new, right previois production (except Mark V dont have 3 screws on bottom like Zeiss body have here on picture), but otherwise other differences are visible.

What I noticed, on new model, white powder coated paint, much easier peal off from binoviewer.

All in all, love it!

Kind regards

Optically, nothing changed, and I have to say way less (but still very few) fine scratches on prism surfaces than ever before 💪💪💪

Excellent improvement there for my taste! ❤️

Denis, I am glad you are still making those BVs better and better...

But, to be honest with you, I do not like those bayonet couplers, I'd much rather have a T2 female connector on my Baader Mark V. So, can I unscrew the Bayonet and replace it with some sort of T2 connector, for example like the one you got me on the "Zeis APO" BV?

Correct me if I am wrong but it seems to me that the bayonet connector increases the light path of the BV.

Hi Vlad,

yes, you are correct about light path larger distance what using Mark V, and through years, many Mark V and other same design users, claimed their binoviewer fell down on floor, and dent, and/or chip prisms/paint/metal deformation, because in dark, when switching using Quick Changer, sometimes happen, while user dont see in dark, doesnt lock bino securely, and tragedy happened.

Simmilar thing but without tragedy happened to me twice, where I was thinking I locked it safely, no matter how carefull I am.

I also preffer T2 female system like Maxbright II and APO binociewers have, which took minimum path, but most importantly for me, bino setup with diagonal is like made from one part, and there is ZERO affraid anything could dissasamble/fell out/down.

So Denis, is the conversion possible?

Hello,

what exact conversion you think yout?

Supercharging, yes, its possible.

I believe the new one still has a cast body, but it has undergone machining. There are traces of casting marks on the body.

I am thinking about replacing the bayonet coupler with T2 female thread coupler.

Its technically possible if you need rotatable locking system,, BUT, Mark V T2 bayonet often can not be unscrewed at all, because its such superhigh glued, no matter even if I dissasamble that part and use very high heat, and also, I would then there suggest machining existing back part after unscrewing bayonet.

I have several ideas already, but wouldnt recommend it there at all due risky process.

Thank you Denis. It sounds like I should leave it alone, and that's what I am going to do.

Bit off topic but I always wanted to ask you, what would you say is the "best" corrector for the Zeiss APO binoviewer? By "best" I mean the sharpest. Color correction is also important but it's secondary. I have TV corrector (which is 1.25" silver tube 5 cm long, T2). Then I have the Baader Glasspathcorrector (black cylinder 2" diameter, about 10 cm long, T2 connector) and I also have those 1.25x and 1.75x Baader lens correctors which fit between the T2 diagonal and binoviewer. I specifically purchased all this for my TEC-180 f/7. Thank you for your input.

Hi Vlad,

honestly I never played much with GPCs, while I like most, not using them, by having bino friendly telescopes, no matter if they were originally already like that, but also by cutting telescope tubuses by making it like that.

You have really nice collection of GPCs, so you can say it definetly better than I can.

BTW, TEC 180 APO is incredible instrument, and I can only dream how are the views through it using binoviewers 😲

Kind regards
Denis

Hey Denis - interesting report.

Just to confirm your comment on removing the bayonet - I asked Baader and was told it was impossible. My experience is that few things are impossible in engineering but many are more effort than they are worth.

I'm curious about the black paint - can you see a contrast difference at the eyepiece?

Hi Bruce,

sometimes is possible to unscrew bayonet, sometimes not because its glued so hard.

I sucessfully uncrewed many through past years in process of Supercharging, cleaning, and collimation, but there was very few times I couldnt despite using all tricks as product of my imagination.

I never tried comparing contrast terms before vs after painting BTW.

I just wish Baader implement in Mark V same back system as then have with their Maxbright II, where you can choose what back connection you want: T2 bayonet, or T2 female rotational ring.

Hope they will improve that once in future, same like they listenet me once I recommend them to make, and use Heavy Duty Quick Changer system to not leaving marks on binoback, as it was before when they used and had only normal QC with screw.

Kind regards

Denis
