In Uranometria 2000 you'll occasionally find an open circle with an R or RU labelling it. Open circles are for variable stars, but nowhere can I find text explaining the R or RU designation. What is it describing?

E.g.- plate 155, 25° 16h 10m designated RU, or same plate 18°20' 16h 6m designated R.

Not radio sources, which get a triangle.

Apparently it's a Bayer designation scheme for variable stars, well-covered in a wikipedia page titled "Variable-star designation".
