I have several suspicious chunks and am wondering if it's advisable to coat them with something like boiled linseed oil? I notice your specimen has rather a shinny coat?

-Boiled Linseed oil is basically a clear coat that's durable (like a thin shinny plastic) but can easily be washed off in minutes with an alcohol if need be.

It also brings out the tone and texture of natural things like rocks and wood giving them a kind of wet look.

Yes, it is a bit shiny due to me treating it with a very small amount of G-96 gun oil this morning.  Over the next few days it will transition to a more satin appearance, which I prefer.     I have heard of some collectors using Rem Oil because it contains teflon.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I think what I should do is find an interesting rock to practice on - in both application and then alcohol removal just to make sure..
