Hi all,

I am working to automate my setup and ran into a frustrating situation. I have successfully tested my camera with EO and was going to by the pro software to build fully featured scripts but they have started a sales blackout. They won't sell it for the week leading up to the event! I emailed them requesting an opportunity to purchase, but I'm guessing they're on vacation for their own eclipse photography.

I'm struggling to manually create a script to capture the phenomena not available in the free version and could use a starting point which features all of the phenomena from the script wizard.

If someone would be so kind as to create a script with all the phenomena with my setup info I can fiddle with it from there. I will greatly appreciate being bailed out here!

I'll be shooting from Waco TX area without a shutter release cable using a D850 and a 500mm focal length. Details below. I don't have a tracker and without mirror up lock I expect a lot of shutter shock so I'm trying to opt for the fastest shutter speed possible.

Location (not necessary for script?)

31° 26.3050' N

97° 42.6283' W

Elevatoin 130 m

Maximum Exposure Time:2 second

Prefferred Aperature: 5.6

Preferred ISO: 400

File Type: RAW

Minimum Spacing between exposures: 1 Second

Please select all phenomena

Camera is

500 mm, .5.6 f/

Recyle time .75s

No shutter cable (haven't figured how to do this on D850)

No mirror lock up (Unavailable w/o shutter?)

I greatly appreciate anyone who can help!

I gotta say, these sales embargos are really dumb. It's such a paternalistic, "I know better than you" attitude. And I get their intent, but a complete embargo is not the only way to avoid last minute support requests

Hopefully you got the script you need!

Agreed. I think a giant banner with obnoxious reminders about lack of support the week prior would achieve a similar outcome.

Embargo aside I am amazed at how powerful and convenient the software available for such a niche interest is. I am grateful!

The web site where you can buy it says they stop selling April 6th through the 9th - https://shop.icstars...pro-emailed-key.

Look in the install folder for the sample scripts.  They have all the options in there.

Just edit in notepad for full control.

Here you go. I had to use my camera as I don't know which one you have. Also, the script loaded an fratio of 5.0 instead of 5.6. I used a value of 1 for all set values. You'll have to adjust the timing and shutter speeds accordingly - nothing a good hacker can't overcome.

Now, having brought up the hacker subject, does ANYONE know where I/we can get a "Script/programmers" manual for this command set???? I can't believe this thing has been out for nearly 30 years and nowhere, does an internet search for information on the various command fields return useful, detailed information - My thanks in advance for an accurate answer.

LongArmMcgee:

The location - IS - needed for the script. It sets the duration of the event. if you're at dead center EO will set you up with ~4min30sec from C2 to C3, halfway there ~3min 57sec. I canceled my trip to TX and will have ~3min30sec in upstate NY.

GMartin2000:

The manual, which you'll find in the EO folder under programFiles(x86), has brief descriptions starting on pg50. as far as I know that's all you're gonna get.

I'm looking for an opinion on why the Diamond Rings are shooting at 1/500 but Bailys Beads are only 1/4000 in GMartins2000s script (1/8000 in my D850 script) The DRs are way brighter than BB so should have a shorter exposure or at least equal to BB???

Glad to see I'm not the only procrastinator.

You want a bright, over-exposed "diamond" and some of the inner corona to get the Diamond Ring effect. You want a much lower exposure to be able to see the individual beads for Bailey's Beads, hence the difference between the exposures.

Thanks for the reply Paul, so you agree with me? my BB in 2017 was at 1/640 then my DRs progress from 1/640 to 1/3200. I could post jpgs but no one wants to see my poor focus...

See my new post for slightly more info: "Eclipse Orchestrator and Exposure Timing between DiamondRings and Baily's"

I think I'll make a script at f13 iso640 and see what EO comes up with, compare the two and add a little fudge from there.

I think I'll make a script at f13 iso640 and see what EO comes up with, compare the two and add a little fudge from there.

In 2017, I did a 3-image bracket from about 15 seconds before the start of totality until just after totality started; 1/250, 1/500 and 1/1000 sec (f/8, ISO 100). I used the 1/250 sec from about 13 seconds before and after for a Diamond Ring image and the 1/1000 sec image from 3 or 4 sec before totality for the Bailey's Beads image in a sequence I put together from my images. I thought the Diamond Ring image was about right, but that the Bailey's Beads image should have been two stops darker, which would match Fred Espenak's recommendation for Bailey's Beads at 1/4000 sec, f/8 ISO 100. This year I am planning to do a 5-image bracket from 1/250 sec to 1/4000 sec, which should cover the whole range. I think some of the confusion may be because there is some uncertainty about the definition of the Diamond Ring Effect and Bailey's Beads. This is my interpretation from information that I found before the 2107 eclipse.

probably a moderator should move Paul and my posts to my main topic post, if they're not currently out chasing the eclipse...I originally was just replying to Longarm and gmartin2000's posts.

Thanks again for your replies Paul. I don't see much room for improvement in your pics, but I know what you're going for.

All should consider:

1st rule of Mechanics: If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Rule 1a: If it works it can work better (see rule #1)

LOL, can't count how many times I've been stuck in that loop.

Good luck and I hope you'll share your improved pics later.

As for me I'll be shooting 2 D850's on a iOptron Alt-Az Pro, I'll let OE run one and do 5 shot brackets on the other. Hope there's some Sun Spots to focus on...

Happy Trails All,

Pete Watson

Thanks all for the help! I used Dan's link to buy the software!

I'm currently scrambling to find some clear skies and we are staring down the barrel of a 5 hour drive to Arkansas. That's the only area that the asyrospheric combined model agrees on to have clear skies
