"People can see just by common sense that the sun is not 93 million miles away," one TikToker said. Posted today on Gizmodo.  I thought this was originally an April Fools joke, but it looks like it's for real. Where do these folks come from?

Other gems include:

“If they’re telling us to not look at the eclipse, it’s prolly good for us to LOOK AT THE ECLIPSE,” one X user wrote on Wednesday.

“I’ve always looked at eclipses plus almost every day I will stare at the sun for about 5 minutes. I’m not blind yet. They lied about that,” another X user chimed in.

There are also TikTok creators who have been claiming the eclipse “glasses scam” is just a way for companies to make money selling eyewear. By discouraging people from looking at the sun, they say, “people can see just by common sense that the sun is not 93 million miles away.”

Well, if one makes decisions in life based on what they see on TikTok, then they get what they deserve.

I've given up trying to reason with such morons.  They refuse any and all legitimate evidence and choose to believe only what they want to believe...anything to the contrary is a lie and the evidence is fake.  Dr.  Sagan's fears from the "Demon Haunted World" are coming to pass....bawling.gif

I agree. Needless to say, I was not surprised to read about these antics of TikTok influencers.

I guess these morons also think the only reason the sun is dark at night is because that's when they're changing the bulb.

re: staring at the sun without protection.

I tend to think that these types of statements have to be said in jest or they are just trolling.  Nobody is that stupid. Even hardcore conspiracy theorists won't follow that advice.

But as long as they have insurance and the taxpayer doesn't have to foot the medical bills, they can do what they want with their own eyes. They might even get honorable mention at the Darwin Awards website.

Nobody is that stupid.

Yes. They are. Google "schools closed for eclipse 2024" and read some of the rationales being used.

It's also going to make the Tik-Tokkin' a lot harder when the central retina is fried. One way to get rid of followers I guess.

We'll know they were serious if we see a lot of people walking around with eyepatches on.

Welcome to the age of idiocracy.

I remember when that movie was just another comedy. I had no idea so many would use it as a how-to life manual.

TikTok Science Quote of the day :

"All these people complaining about clouds and bad weather ruining their fun. Maybe they should have thought about the weather before scheduling an Eclipse for April ? "

The name TikTok is misleading and suggests mental capacity that just isn't there. It should be called Tik....................................................................................Tok

As stupid as these people are, some of them are actually just trolling for views/likes. I believe this is one of them.

“The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.” ~ Terry Pratchett

Simply substitute the word "empty" for "open" ...

In fairness to the 'Tok, it's not the only place of questionable eclipse-related 'wisdom'.

In fairness to the 'Tok, it's not the only place of questionable eclipse-related 'wisdom'.

What the eclipse forecasts for a Virgo - “You might have an opportunity to reduce debt, for example, but you might also really have to pay attention to getting your taxes in order,”

That's profound. Nostrodamus would be jealous.

I guess the next astrological forecast will be, "If you want to lose weight, you should exercise and not eat as much."
