A member of the Coma I galaxy cluster, NGC 4559 is spiral galaxy around 30 million light years away. This sketch was difficult to do and demanded very good dark adaptation. I have brightened the sketch here so that some of the details I saw (or imagined I saw!) can be more easily seen. It was not this bright in the eyepiece but with good dark adaptation a hint of its spiral shape became apparent as well as its extended shape. I really thought I caught a central bar that seemed as straight as an arrow but perhaps my mind was connecting bright concentrations. Perhaps I was channeling Percival Lowell and his Martian canals! This galaxy has been on my sketching bucket list for a long time and last night's sky conditions were ideal for this one!
Thanks for looking and clear skies,
Randolph
