We drove from NC to Cincy today and traffic seemed lighter than usual. I think worries about traffic before the eclipse are overblown. Traffic after will probably be as bad as advertised.

Interstate 24 going from Nashville up towards totality had a lot of traffic today with inexplicable traffic jams, but they weren't terrible. Our hotel in Murray KY, an hour from totality, has got a lot of eclipse travelers.

I am in Indy and just north of the city. Drove out yesterday and it was fine, drove around today and it seemed pretty normal. Tomorrow may well be a different story since it’s a mid afternoon event. The forecast here is fair to good with clouds supposed to clear mid morning.

Exactly.

Everyone can arrive at their leisure so I wouldn't expect any big backups until perhaps a couple hours before the eclipse as people move around to find the prime locations. When totality ends, all the people that came just want to get home and everyone is going to start heading out at once. That's when the madhouse happens IMO. I think it will be like everyone leaving an NFL game. Only difference is the volume. Instead of 70,000 fans there are likely to be hundreds of thousands hitting the roads.
