Finally home and had a chance to go through some images shot in Bloomington, IN and post this series.  These were all shot using a Nikon D850 w/ a 500mm PF lens and a 1.4 teleconverter for a 700mm focal length.  Planned on shooting manual at ISO 200; however, due to some thin high cloud cover just before totality, I decided to abandon my manual exposure settings and boost the ISO to 800 and switch to program shooting mode.  Had I not done that, I think would’ve had better IQ - I had to filter out some noise that affected the image sharpness.  I also just noticed yesterday that the VR setting on my lens had been switched on sport mode (probably just careless handling on my part).  I’m very grateful for the experience and happy enough with the results but thinking they could’ve been better if I’d just stuck to my plan.

Caught a few stars during totality, maybe due to the higher ISO setting.

I was very impressed with the accuracy of the Xavier Jubier utility in predicting the Baily’s beads for my location.

So my pictures are nothing exciting as I was using a sun funnel, but you can tell how cloudy it was when the eclipse started compared to when it was ending. The one picture shows the clouds about 5 minutes before totality. Fortunately they cleared up more before totality but even at that level they weren't really a problem.

Final processing of what I captured from Mazatlan:

The eclipse was visually spectacular despite the high clouds. Really looking forward to clear skies in Luxor in 2027 to capture some corona streamers.
More versions of the rings, Baily’s beads, prominences and a time-lapse here: https://www.astrobin.com/0ef83r/F/

I posted this in a separate thread, but figured I'd add it here as well. Pretty exciting to capture a little sungrazer comet, SOHO-5008

Did you do a radial blur to get more Coronal detail? You can get that ring around the center when the sun isn't perfectly centered. This is what my hold-up has been with the Espenak method. I can't get it perfectly centered no matter how hard I try...

Are you doing it with a stack of images? My guess is that if you aligned to the stars and/or prominences (sun), the movement of the moon is elongating the black disc so it's no longer circular. The only workaround I can think of is to mask in a fresh moon from a single image afterwards and figure out a way to blend the transition space adjacent to the moon (such as have it be blown out white, or spend more time blending coronal detail with gradient filters or something).

Spent some time with the data today from my 12" scope.  Have a couple images to share.

First is the full disk near Max totality.

This second image was obtained using AS!4 to generate 2 image stacks.  I was trying to isolate Bailey's Beads but alas I was a bit over exposed and the bright regions are totally blown out.  I can tell they are in there but I can't pull them out from the stark white blown out pixels.

20240408 D500 C2 composite 01

I was in Spencer, Indiana, so I had a pretty similar experience to what maj saw

A composite of images around C2. Unfortunately I bumbled  the start of my photo sequence around C3 so missed the Baily's beads there.

Great Images! waytogo.gif

We managed to find a spot in Brady, TX at the northern edge of the shadow's path with only light high clouds. Minutes before totality some low clouds passed through and evoked a little panic feeling, but right for the main event they passed us by. Well worth the trip from Germany!

Here's my effort at an HDR image, comprised of 13 images at different exposures from 4 seconds to 1/1000 sec. Magog, Canada.

Canon 700d, Sigma 150-500mm zoom @ 400mm, f/11. Processed in Photoshop.

No, it’s just a single exposure.

Finally finished a couple of my edits.  Seems everyone in here like me was way more into C3 prominences than C2.  Wide corona was images using a Zenithstar 61 and .8 flattener with a CanonT6s.  The close ups were from the SVBONY SV503 80mm, a 2x barlow, with a Panasonic G9.  Canon controlled via windows and Eclipse Orchestrator, the G9 using mac and Solar Eclipse Maestro.
Raw images were processed using Rawtherapee, exported as 32 bit TIFF.  Then further stacking and processing was done using Affinity Photo 2.  I have a small write up for the corona stack here in case anyone is looking for affinity tips https://www.cloudyni...affinity-photo/

I'm still experimenting, but this is the best I've gotten so far in trying to get an HDR image of the corona using GIMP, using 7 different exposures ranging from 1/640 sec to 1.3 seconds. The camera was controlled by BackyardEOS, since I didn't really have time to learn any new software. Taken in Russellville, Arkansas using my old Canon T3i with the kit 75-300mm lens at 300mm, F11, ISO 200, mounted on a Sky Watcher Star Adventurer.

Honestly, I was more focused on observing the event since I hardly looked at all at the 2017 Eclipse.

I originally was going to Mazatlan, but I couldn't find a reasonable flight from Mexico City.  How did you get there?

We flew with AeroMexico from Mexico City the 5th of April. We bought the tickets a year before, as we were afraid they would sell out.
Where did you go then?
