So. i am hoping someone can explain what i must have screwed up when using fire capture and my 294mm pro trying to capture the solar eclipse. what i saw on the screen and when i got in the .SER file (did a time lapse) are so different I am struggling to understand it. I will admit right away I am NOT a solar observer, this was my first time using fire capture.

 

this is what the .SER file gave me

 

This is what the screen showed

 

 

what went wrong here?

bad settings?

camera couldn't do it?

wrong codex/not using the right program to view it (used VLC media player as well as Microsoft clipchamp both showed the same crap)?

 

thoughts on this?

and yes i did have a solar filer on the redcat51

well... 1st time has to be a disaster.  i'd say mostly overexposure.  I saw a couple of eclipse websites that said, don't go out &  buy a camera and go out there 1st time thinking u can get good pics; u won't; just enjoy the eclipse visually.  I imaged the sun last week 1st time; had lots of white snow around the sun; but nothing like yours.  but i just stacked 10 frames from a dslr (nikon d5300 at iso 4000 4000th sec) (baader solar film);  i then saw in AS!3 the options for bad bit map, and Darks, and Bias and Flats (which i still want to do/try). For urs i'd try viewing individual segments and extract the good ones. that's what i had to do with video of eclipse that was laser beamed all over.; then took frames into gimp and ran down the brightness; ran up the contrast; was able to salvage something.  But i like ur image; looks like it was embroidered on a machine.

I think its just the software you are looking at the files on.

 

If it looked good in Firecapture it should be good data.  They SER viewer or PIPP, or any of the stacking programs.

 

Windows and VLC aren't really made for SER files.

99% sure youve just got the wrong bit depth selected. if its 16 and youve got 8, or vice versa.
