I got out early this morning and got in several hours of observing with my 15x70 and 10x56 binoculars. I've been meaning to do a sketch of these two objects in my 15x70s, and finally got around to it before the sun came up. This is only my second full sketch and I did it much larger than the last one, and my positioning of stars suffered a little in my opinion. I do think M4 and the colors I saw in Antares, Alniyat, and and 22 Scorpii are good reproductions of what I observed.

 

Sketched in graphite on mixed media paper and inverted, cleaned-up and colorized digitally.

You should be because it was way too bright. I don't know why I failed to see it before, but the digital process I used to reduce the appearance of the graininess from the paper (which made M4 look far more grainy than it did in "real life") also dramatically brightened the cluster. I put it side-by-side with the otherwise unaltered inverted image and reduced to brightness to match, and uploaded it to post #1 above. I believe this is a better representation of how it looked yesterday morning.

 

Thank you for mentioning this! This was my first time sketching and digitally "enhancing" a non-stellar object and obviously need to me mindful in the future of not altering the brightness from what I originally sketched.

This pair is a good target for binoculars and you have made a nice sketch of the view.  

 

I don't know what the field of view for your binoculars is but I suspect it is similar to the 4.4 degree FOV of my 15x70's.  If you ever revisit Antares and M4, you can put them at the bottom of the field and include the binocular triple Rho Ophiuchi in the view.  See this sketch.

Your binoculars are truly brilliant at producing sketches, and you have a great pair of eyes. 

 

I remember observing M4 with my William Optics 158mm apochromatic refractor a few years ago. 

I was stunned by its beauty and its dark lanes. 

I only observed it the once. 

But it was well worth it. 

I have a desperately bad horizon up here in Ireland.

Thanks Michael, yes the FOV of this binocular is 4.2°. Interestingly enough, I almost framed this sketch just as you did to show Rho Ophiuchi as well when I too realized I could fit it in the FOV, but ultimately decided to just center M4 and Antares instead as I had originally intend. Interesting that you chose to use the same instrument as I did for this pair of objects, clearly they are perfectly suited for 15x70s!

Beautiful view!  The colors of those two prominent stars come through quite nicely and realistically and good attention paid to magnitudes.  The eye is continually pulled toward the mysterious looking M4.  Always good to take a step back for a wide view like this.  Nothing compares.
