I want to image my next solar eclipse with Nikon telephoto (600mm?) lens and my Nikon Z7II.

I was considering the Nikkor 600 mm telephoto lens with “size-reducing Phase Fresnel lens element.”

But but I’ve heard that you may see some flaring in direct sunlight with Phase Fresnel lenses???

Can anybody help me with this?
Does anybody have any experience with this type of lens?
Previously I would use my Lunt 80 mm telescope but since I’ll be traveling for the next eclipse, I want to just take a camera, lens and small tracking mount.

Any recommendations on the very best telephoto lens to use for solar eclipse DSLR filter and white light imaging?

Thanks!

I just posted a bunch of photos taken with my D850 and 500mm pf lens manually tracked on a tripod with a geared head.  I am happy with the IQ and haven’t encountered any weird effects using this lens.

Thanks Maj!
Your images are great and the link/thread is very helpful. My goal is to get the coronal detail that some people have been able to capture. And see some moon surface detail.  Bracketing including some relatively long exposures to 1/8 sec I think.
And ISO 200-400.

Thanks again!

my wife just got a used WO redcat51 for this express purpose, little does she know that i plan to use the next 2 years to convert her to astrocam... heresy, i know, i apologize for including that in this thread.  blush.gif

when it comes to pricepoint, the redcat51 seems really hard to beat - with the exception that it's better for crop sensor cameras.  maybe dial up to redcat61?

7273.JPG 7231.JPG 7311.JPG No totality but here's my close call! I shot this from Smithfield, RI.  I used a NIKON D5600 dslr, A 1000mm Meade 4" telephoto and a glass solar filter. I was happy with my tripod mounted results!

Shots of my basic gear. A NIKON D5600 dslr, a MEADE 1000mm f/10 sct telephoto lens , and a glass solar filter. They are mounted on a tripod and a cable release was used.
