Well, after much speculation, the new D3 has been officially announced.

It seems that on May 30th at 11 am EST we will have more news about it and a possible pre-release, specs and dates.

We will stay tuned.

I update because Dwarflab has just published the release date and specs!!!

Captura-de-pantalla-2024-05-14-173544.pn

Comparison with D2:

Captura-de-pantalla-2024-05-14-173544.pn

It does not indicate the weight or anything else, what is confirmed is that 30 May is the release date.

I, who was waiting to see the results of the Vespera Pro to buy it or not this summer, am already hesitating, and on top of that there is news coming soon from ZWO...

So, to compare the D3 to probably it's closest competitor, the Seestar.

  • D3 has a 13% worse pixel resolution.
  • D3 has a 30% higher Dawes Limit.
  • D3 has a much larger Field of View, although smaller than the D2.

So so very tempted to order this now to go alongside my Vespera II. Just for some nice widefield shots and the sorts. I know the V II will likely outperform it completely, but it'll be nice to have one to go alongside it.

Depending on the price, i think i might just give it a go.

Hate to say, I'm more interested in seeing a upgrade to what the Seestar offers (~70mm, much better sensor, better for solar and planets) than a incremental improvement to the Dwarf 2.

For those that ordered a D2, the improvement in the image sensor is enough to warrant cancelling the order / sending it back.

I'm definitely interested in Dwarf 3, and would use it alongside my Seestar S50. As always, YMMV and probably will, but for me, having a wider FOV smart telescope, with more manual imaging options will pair well with my more "point-and-shoot" Seestar.

Your chart for the Dwarf II is incorrect. The IMX415 chip for the D2 has 8Mp resolution , and the image scale for the D2 is 2.99 not the 5.97 arc/secs as shown in your chart.

I guess my chart might be a bit out of date, as it was made when 2x2 binning was the only option on the D2. I think DwarfLabs have removed that restriction, but I haven't tested that so considered it not fair to include that in my comparison.  NOTE: Not tested because my D2 no longer works :(

I’m slated to test and review a Dwarf III - For my blog, as well as submitting one here, to Cloudy Nights.
If all goes as it did for The Dwarf II, then I should be receiving it before they go on sale to the public.
Clear skies!

Comparison to the Vespera PRO.

This Dwarf III model already looks interesting, and I am curious to see the results. In its current form, the Vespera Pro is unusable and sits on the shelf.

It is bothering me just a little to see dwarf lab still thinking the infrared spectrum is a benefit to be mixed with the visible spectrum, I’ve seen them tell people in the past in their forum to use ir pass instead of ircut when doing Astro causing people to have bloated stars, incorrect color and focus issues. Users and reviewers have made videos illustrating it was wrong but now dwarf lab seems to  double down and name their ir pass filter “Astro” for the dwarf 3. This has been especially confusing to newbies over the last year… because the ir pass use does give a brighter image in a shorter amount of time, they had to be convinced, partially because not many Dso images were good anyway from the d2. Soooo long story short.. they have named the ir/cut filter “vis”  and now people will have to be told not to use “Astro” ….. this is pretty fundamental stuff and do not understand why dwarf lab does not get this. If they want to make infrared imaging available they should change the “Astro filter” to a 850nm filter and block visible light and simply rename it “infrared Astro.” I’ve told them, so they have at least an opportunity to correct before the official announcement on the 30th… although I doubt they will, at least it won’t affect functionality… people who understand will just use the vis filter and add a 850nm filter when selecting the Astro filter if they choose to. Hopefully any of the filters can be selected regardless of mode or else that could potentially affect people ability to do daytime landscape infrareds

It's frustrating that every new product release seems to be met with a barrage of criticism before it even hits the market. It feels like a coordinated effort by a small group to undermine any changes to any new product.

I have seen similar behavior before. There are 10000 stars in the universe to every grain of sand on Earth.

There's room for all who enter this market space.

This was to specifically help them, by at least changing terminology it will save frustration of many users, and if they don’t change it then we will just have to educate people the best we can…

We are here for information and to guide the companies to produce the best products possible, in most cases they appreciate it, in fact D3 is a direct result of pretty harsh criticism of d2, they listened for the most part and improved it in just about every area.

I just bought the Dwarf II six weeks ago at Sam's Club for $399. It's good for what it is. If you try chasing the newest thing, you'll be endlessly buying. I wouldn't be surprised if they or others come out with a subscription service where you get the latest version every six months. It would be impossible to keep up on one's own.

Luckily these are cheap enough so that it’s not too big of a financial hit to upgrade, not sure what my d2 will sell for but it should probably only cost me 3 or 400 to grab the D3 and it does look like a worthy upgrade
