Lagrange, what modern Newt has better optical and mechanical quality than a 1970's Cave?

If you are referring to the mass-market particle board "Dobsonians" I'd have to disagree.

Just one would do. An equatorial 10" F/7 would be a great example.

I will always love the looks of the old school Newts from Meade and Cave.  Mounts were pretty crude but the optics with every Meade and Cave Newt i had was always very good. Seems things are much faster now vs the old days as F/6 or slower was the norm and now sub F/4 seems to be taking over.

Bet my new NEW MOON Dob can hold it's own with the thin Zambuto blank.  But my heart is warmed by the looks of them old scopes in my dreaming years when i was very young.

I'm referring to premium scopes with optics from the likes of Carl Zambuto or Mike Lockwood, and other high-quality components such as Feather Touch focusers.

Mass-market Dobs (and refractors and SCTs) are incredibly good considering how cheap they are.

A 12.5" Cave Newt on a mount with dual axis drives cost $2,490 in 1976. That's the equivalent of over $13,700 today.

I cleaned the place up a bit of off topic banter. If your post was removed in error, I apologize though it looks like all that could be said about Meade has been said... As this car went off the track quite some time ago, its time we lock it up!
