We had a slight clearing this morning after 0500 UTC and I got my 5" Mak out to try and identify some features along what little terminator there was near Mare Crisium. Looking at the opposite limb area near Grimaldi, Riccioli and Lacus Autumni, I saw a lone peak poking above the limb. It seems to be one of the peaks which are part of the northern Rooks Mountains. It must be very high and well known but is not named as of yet.

I believe it is the larger of the two peaks I have arrowed in the LROC image. I love looking at this region of the Moon and am looking forward to favorable libration for Orientale in the future.

It appears to be unnamed both officially and unofficially.

It MIGHT be part of the Montes Cordillera range which is the "outermost" ring of mounts surrounding the Mare Orientale, if I'm interpreting that right.  The above chart seems to have labelled that range at the position of its geometric centre rather than at the feature itself.

Others will correct if I'm wrong.

Easy to identify with this method.
Pt. 0 is the very distinct peak (left in the 2nd pic above). Pt. 4 (right in the 2nd pic above), although 500m higher than Pt. 0, not so prominent. The other barely detectable peaks 1, 2, 3 are farther in the background. All nameless as it looks.
Simulation. Revert to aerial view with CTRL+left mouse.

regards

CHnuschti - Thank you. That's impressive what can be done with LROC.
