If I link to let’s say a 10Mbyte image using BBCode is the linked image actually 10Mbytes on the Cloudy Nights site?

I need to make sure I am not exceeding the limit.

If you link to an external site, the image will be whatever resolution it is on the external site. The 500k limit is only for images uploaded to the forum.

I am not sure this answers my question.  I understand CN has a 500KByte limit for 'uploaded' images.

Will my BBCode 10Mbyte linked image be deleted by an administrator?

I use a BBCode link to my Astrobin whenever I post an image and have never had a post deleted.

No, because the image does not affect the CloudyNights' servers because it is externally hosted.

Yes, but Astrobin tells you that you are only linking to a thumbnail of the actual image.

I don't know the answer - maybe only one way to find out

I may post a large image and see what happens.

Yes it will. The dimension and size requirements apply to any image that renders on the CN site. There have been countless complaints about this in the feedback forum and the answer is always the same: it applies everywhere and moderators will remove them.

Agree, it’s just a thumbnail but opening it sends you to AB for full resolution.

That sounds perfectly sensible to me.  I have slow internet and don't want to be forced to inadvertently download multi-Gigabyte images when I open a CN thread.

Perhaps its time to get an Astrobin account and not post on Flickr.

Most of us just post a thumbnail which is just a link (if you click it) to a larger image on Astrobin.  It’s easy to avoid.

I post my images to the gallery and link them into the post when I need. It's automatically downsized for the site and you can upload any size or dimension as long as it's <50MB (which is huge!). If it's an unimportant image I'll post it on imgur and link in. I'm not heartbroken if those links are broken.
