Hi all,

Since i am upgrading my mount that can handle more weight, I am looking for an affordable 8-inch scope. I really want to take astrophotography seriously now and want a telescope with good optics which is ideally ranging from f/4 to f/6 or absolute max f/7.

Any suggestions will be appreciated waytogo.gif

Hi,

I've had good luck with GSO equipment. I would search on GSO 8" f/4 Imaging Newtonian Reflector Telescope. It depends on what you consider pricey. There is one for sale used for $358 delivered used at the moment. Contact me privately for the link. New they run around $640.

Regards,

Kevin

Is this your present Newtonian...

If so, for imaging, you might want to down-size instead...

What sort of mount do you have, or are considering?

Yep that is infact my current telescope and for the mount i'm considering is the UMI ragdoll 17 which has a payload capacity of 20kg with counterweights and also why would i wanna down-size?

What do you want to downsize, scope or mount? If you want to keep the same mount and downsize your optics then a lot of people on CN have purchased a Sbony 80mm ED and had great results imaging with it. I just got one on Amazon US for a great price. Currently on sale with 7% off. I cannot speak to its quality yet. Mine has not had first light. I was looking for a grab and go scope and this one came highly recommended. I would also check the Sbony website for discounts too. It is currently much cheaper than the amazon but from what I could determine it ships from mainland China and you may have brokerage, duties and taxes that way. Depends on which country you're located in. URL 1 Amazon and URL 2 is Sbony.com

An 8 inch f4 for imaging needs a minimum of an EQ6. Anything less and you probably want to go with a 6.

The CarbonStar looks pretty nice.

But in an 8 inch f4, I'd like the Vixen R200SS.

I have the Orion 8" f4, which is really a GSO. But I just use it for richfield visual.

....on a 40 pound capacity manual alt az mount with 2 inch stainless AVX tripod.

Is it sharp? I don't know. I haven't ever got it collimated exactly right. It might be.

A 2.9 degree carpet of stars looks real good at 28x with 7mm exit pupil.
