I spotted something I didn't see anyone else mention. Your upper truss mount locations are in the mid-span of each quarter of ring, between struts mounting the top ring. This means the bottom ring is not taking advantage of the rigidity provided by the upper ring. I recommend a thin sheet of carbon fiber or similar to tie the two rings together (with lots of screws all the way around). This will reduce any flexure of the lower ring at the truss mount points.

Impressive build!

Scott makes a good point.  Adding a web between your UTA rings will add a ton of stiffness to the structure.

I have never worked with carbon fiber but go the cheap route with aluminum roof flashing from most any hardware store.  Can be found in various widths 6", 8", 10" etc.  I used 8" flashing for my recent build and the cost for a 10' roll was about $15 IIRC.   It can be easily cut with a razor by scoring and folding at the score line.  I sand the snapped edge and then hem it between a couple wood blocks to hide sharp edges and corners even more and creates a stiff section to attach to the focuser board.  Then I match drill the inside about every 2-3" and secure with #6 black zinc screws.  Lot of builders use Kydex for the web but it has a tendency to warp in the hot desert sun.   I also recently added Protostar flockboard to about half of my UTA opposite the focuser.  In hindsight the flockboard might be sturdy enough to be used by itself as a web material.

I made several UTA assemblies using black Formica. It is very durable and will not warp. The material is used for counter tops, so think about how it can handle hot pots and pans or frozen goods from the fridge. And it can be cleaned with Windex or soap and water. I also made a UTA for my 13.1" scope using ABS plastic. It was also very durable and is often used for car dashboards, so it can handle extreme heat and cold without issues. The ABS had a textured surface that I put to the exterior and the inside was smooth. I did rough up the inside with Scotch Brite to make it very dull. The Formica inside was just sprayed with flat black and the texture made it very non-reflective too. Both materials are easily cut on a table saw and held in with small, short black screws.

The left UTA is a 14.3" with Formica and the right is the 13 with ABS.

Plus one for countertop Formica.

I used the same sheet that I bought to line the trunnions. Looks good too with matching red highlights.

However, a cover for your telescope is also highly recommended not only to keep it from baking in the Sun, but also to protect it from the surprise thunderstorms or rain showers that can come out of nowhere. Astro Systems sells excellent covers that are very good and both wards off the Sun's heat and rain. You can leave the telescope covered with one and have peace of mind while you're getting some

sleep at a star party.

Your mention of a weather cover got me inspired! I am visiting my parents, so was not able to work on the telescope this week, but since I have my sewing machine here I decided to make a weather cover. I made it just like a tent, and will use the same waterproofing on the seams.

I was thinking of making a shroud today as well, but decided it's probably best to wait until I am back with the scope to tailor it correctly.

I sincerely apologize to all of Southern California for causing the cloudy weather all this week. It was a mission to try and find a break in the clouds to do a focus test and cut the struts to length, but I finally did it tonight! cloudy.gif
