I was thinking about how difficult it is to find classic scopes, eyepieces and accessories these days. The thought occurred to me that we need a "CLASSIC CLASSIFIEDS" only section. It might spur folks along in selling or trading equipment they don't use any longer... It might help me find that eyepiece I'm looking for!😄 Just a thought... There might already be something like that and I just missed it...

The Craigslist thread here is full of people posting about classics for sale all over the world. It's basically what you're looking for (although you need to wade through the inevitable commentary on many of the postings to get to the next one).

Too vague for a classified ad, arguments over dates that qualify, when exactly a scope was made.

What exactly are you looking for? You can always put up a wanted ad. The current classifieds is good enough and you can always find classics within the categories.

I have an ad up on eyepieces. However, I have little hope it will turn up anything. Burgess/TMB 4mm...

I posted a "wanted" ad for an orange tube C60 or C80 a month ago in the refractor section of the classifieds. By now it's buried with newer ads. I keep my fingers crossed. Bill

Funny you mention that, I bought one of the real ones, not a clone a couple of months back so they do pop up from time to time.

You really have to monitor the ads everywhere and jump on 0.965 - 24.5mm eyepieces. Search for BOTH. Be ready to jump and pay. I wanted a 30mm Kellner for my classics. A set of Celestrons from Japan showed up and I pounced immediately, even though the others were duplicates I didn't need.

That induced me to finally buy a binoviewer :) Win/win :)

Stepping up to orthos/Kellners/Plossls from the world of Huygens/Ramsdens has made a world of difference with my Meade 226.

Yeah, a couple years ago I was trying to get a whole set of UO orthos. To get the whole set too a long time because they just came up piecemeal and if you don’t jump on those right away someone else snaps them up. Some things sell almost immediately and others take longer. I check the classifieds almost daily, even when I’m not in the market for anything, although right now I’m looking for minor pieces of hardware.

I had a person that has one but he's in Europe and neither he nor I know anything about how to get it shipped and at what costs these days. I went all the way back to September of last year here on the classifieds before I found any Burgess/ TMB for sale... So, I might be out of luck...

In the late 90s I decided to acquire a full set of Meade Research Grade eyepieces. Took me around 2 years. I cannot imagine trying to duplicate that with today’s prices.

Agreed. I've been looking for a 4mm UO HD Ortho and a 9mm Pentax SMC Ortho for years. I've missed out on them multiple times. Just keep looking.

Those were sold new within the last twenty years. There is still a rebranded version available. If there was a classified section adhering to our own rules here in classics, it wouldn’t meet the criteria.

Anyway, this is the same eyepiece, or a close clone of it:

See:

and

I had one some years ago, (the one marked TMB). I thought it was nothing extra. My advice: get a 4mm DeLite. It’s a similar eyepiece but taken to a new level through refinements by TeleVue.

I'm wanting the original 4mm to go with the others in the set that I already have. LAST ONE I'm searching for...

Brian, I still haven't found the 4mm, but I did get my hands on 5 University Optics volcano top orthos and a 3.8 Klee barlow recently...
